The Invite to stream on HBO Max next month
Olivia Wilde’s The Invite will begin streaming on HBO Max on October 23, according to a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery.The A24 film stars Seth Rogen, Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Notably, it is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs by Cesc Gay.
Meanwhile, Will McCormack and Rashida Jones wrote the screenplay for the comedy-drama. The film follows a married couple who invite their upstairs neighbors over for a dinner party. However, the evening takes unexpected turns as secrets about their relationships come to light.
The Invite initially premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival on January 24 to a standing ovation. Subsequently, a bidding war followed between several studios, with A24 ultimately securing U.S. distribution rights. The film then received a limited theatrical release on June 26 before expanding wide on July 10.
The film has earned $57.4 million worldwide against a $15 million budget. It holds a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 287 reviews. Metacritic assigned the film a score of 82 out of 100, indicating universal acclaim.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the film “marvelously entertaining.” Benjamin Lee of The Guardian described it as a “genuinely funny and uncommonly intelligent comedy for adults.” Kate Erbland of IndieWire called it “a truly adult comedy with plenty to say and even more laughs to share.” David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter declared the film “well worth RSVPing.”
A24 released the film on digital streaming and VOD platforms on August 11. HBO Max’s October lineup also features the debut of new drama seriesWarstarring Sienna Miller and Dominic West.
