Enzo Maresca’s Instagram activity left fans confused and shocked in equal measure amid news of Manchester City being found guilty in the 115 charges case.
City were charged with 115 breaches of financial rules by the Premier League over a nine-year period back in February 2023 and the case was eventually reviewed by an independent commission.
There was a lack of movement for a verdict for more than 18 months, with Premier League chief Richard Masters forced to comment on the delay.
But on Friday, David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the news that City had been found guilty on 114 out of the 115 charges.
Having maintained their innocence all along, the club issued a strongly-worded statement in response to the development.
Enzo Maresca’s Instagram comment after Man City charges verdict
The comment, given to major news outlets, saw City insist the process is “ongoing” and they are widely expected to appeal the decision.
City have not posted on their official website and their manager’s social media activity was particularly strange.
During the international break after leading City to seven wins out of seven in all competitions, Maresca posted an Instagram ‘dump’, with the caption, “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.”
Maresca’s first picture included a photo of him walking barefoot on grass. Comments were not turned on but the post, shared at a similar time to the charges bombshell, gained huge traction.
One user on X commented: “Now is not the time to be posting feet.”
A second wrote: “You must learn new things.”
A third added: “Bro just realized pep set him up.”
A fourth stated: “He doesn’t know he’s getting demoted to championship football.”
In July, Maresca said he had “no concerns” regarding the charges when he was appointed City manager. His predecessor Pep Guardiola had regularly backed the club’s stance.

- Failure to provide accurate and up-to-date financial information from 2009/10 to and including 2017/18 – 54 alleged breaches
- Failure to cooperate with Premier League investigations from December 2018 to February 2023 – 35 alleged breaches
- Failure to provide accurate financial reports for player and manager compensation from 2009/10 to and including 2017/18 – 14 alleged breaches
- Breaches of Premier League profitability and sustainability regulations from 2015/16 to and including 2017/18 – Seven alleged breaches
- Failure to comply with UEFA’s regulations, including UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations – Five alleged breaches
What punishments could Manchester City face following the 115 charges decision?
City are poised to appeal but it is understood that all punishments are on the table.
Rule W.51 in the Premier League handbook states that fines, points deductions and even a potential expulsion from the Premier League could be possible punishments.
There is even suggestion of retrospective punishment, with Rio Ferdinand claiming he will be entitled to a seventh Premier League medal.
And it has also been reported that the punishments can be applied even with the appeal process ongoing.
City won three Premier League titles in the aforementioned nine-year period, with Manchester United finishing second twice and Liverpool runners up in 2014.
