Resident Evil has set a new benchmark for video game adaptations. Some of its scariest set pieces were actually shot practically. Zach Cregger has received a lot of praise for his reimagining of the franchise. This is the second time Resident Evil’s live-action arm has been rebooted.

A behind-the-scenes video revealed that the scariest zombie encounter in the entire film was performed practically rather than relying on CGI. The movie has received a lot of praise for its creature design. The footage comes courtesy of the movie’s movement coordinator, Jakub Hudlický.

The particular monster in question was the movie’s most persistent antagonist, the merged zombie. In the adaptation that Zach Cregger has created, zombies that have been dismembered often shoot out tentacles to merge with other undead creatures, forming merged monstrosities. Instead of opting for CGI, the monster was brought to life using stunt performers, as depicted in the post.

How Zach Cregger used practical effects to bring Resident Evil to life

The practical creature effects in the movie were designed by Legacy Effects and Shane Mahan, who has previously worked on horror projects such as Aliens and Predator.

On working with Mahan and how practical effects aided even the VFX process, Cregger said, “You know, you are acting with the thing. It’s not like a tennis ball on a stick that you gotta imagine what it’s going to be. It’s like, that’s it. And even some of our things that ended up being VFX, Shane built the practical thing, and we filmed it that way, and then we would just use the effects to help with the animation. “

Cregger used practical effects multiple times, including the scene where zombies start dropping from the sky. To achieve this, Cregger positioned cranes off-screen, loaded with 150-pound bags of fake blood.

As they dropped, they would explode like human bodies falling from a height. One of them, as revealed by Cregger himself, landed so close to lead actor Austin Abrams that one misstep could have cost him his life.
