The Walking Dead boss says Dead City Season 4 has a ‘good shot’
The Walking Dead franchise boss Scott M. Gimple believes Dead City has a good shot at Season 4. Speaking exclusively to The Direct at MultiCon 2026, Gimple addressed the spin-off’s renewal chances. “I would hope for everyone to hold out hope, because it’s performing well in the numbers, and people are digging it. So, I think it’s got a good shot at it, but it is a different time,” he said.
Dead City Season 3 holds a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the series’ highest so far. In comparison, Season 1 earned 80%, while Season 2 scored 56%. The season ended in September after an eight-week run on AMC and AMC+. Its finale teased an expansion beyond Manhattan into other New York boroughs.
Gimple also explained how the streaming era changed the way he tracks a show’s longevity. “It’s incredible. It’s unbelievable. I can’t even think… It’s just such an alien sort of moment in time. When I was showrunning ‘Walking Dead’, I could calculate, ‘Okay, if the ratings halve every year, we have three to four years left.’ That’s insane,” Gimple said. He continued, “Now, it’s just… The metrics are not as cut-and-dried, and the economics are very different. So, we’ll see what happens. But the greater story of ‘The Walking Dead’ absolutely is going to go on.”
Additionally, Gimple revealed that “the rollout will be slightly slower” for the franchise. New spin-off seasons will arrive with less “urgency and speed” than before. AMC renewed Dead City for Season 2 shortly before the Season 1 finale aired. The network announced Season 3 a month after the sophomore outing wrapped.
Next up, Daryl Dixon Season 4 will conclude Norman Reedus’ European-set spin-off in early 2027. It remains the franchise’s last confirmed release, although a new crossover show is reportedly in the works.
