Florence Pugh tries something totally new. The actress dips her hand into ASMR in a new Netflix video promoting her upcoming series East of Eden. The actor quietly reads from John Steinbeck’s novel while preparing viewers for her role as Cathy Ames.
Netflix released the intimate clip ahead of the limited series’ October 1 premiere. Pugh reads excerpts from the 1952 novel into a microphone, using a soft delivery instead of a conventional promotional performance.
The seven-episode series will stream globally on Netflix at its premiere. Pugh also executive produces the adaptation, which Zoe Kazan wrote and executive produced.

Florence Pugh’s reading connects directly to Cathy Ames, the character at the focus of Netflix’s new interpretation. The series follows Cathy and the Trask family across generations, placing her story within the larger family saga.
Netflix describes Cathy as an antihero, and the series explores the choices and relationships that shape her life. The story spans decades and moves through a changing California, with the American Civil War and World War I framing the narrative.
Pugh leads the cast alongside Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask. Hoon Lee plays Lee, while Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders also appear.
Kazan adapted the series from Steinbeck’s novel and serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart. Garth Davis directed the first four episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed the final three.
