Ryan Garcia breezed through Conor Benn earlier this month, but whilst the Californian is seeking a fast turnaround for his next fight, it seems as though his preferred dance partner is uninterested in a challenge for his WBC welterweight world title.
‘King Ry’ could well be in contention for the 2026 Fighter of the Year award if he is able to secure a third win, having won the WBC’s 147lb world title against Mario Barrios and then defended it against Conor Benn, whilst many pound-for-pound stars have been somewhat inactive.
Garcia has been vocal in his hopes of taking on Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in December after defeating Benn inside two rounds. Cruz halted Nestor Bravo least week and called Garcia out in the post-fight interview.
Now, following the news that Garcia’s other rumoured opponent, Teofimo Lopez, must face Jack Catterall next in order to retain his WBA title, it has become clear that Cruz is his top target.
Yet, despite Cruz requesting a shot at Garcia’s belt following the win over Bravo, Garcia declared that the Mexican is now avoiding the fight, in a clip captured by Ring Magazine.
“Pitbull do not want it, my guy. I told you that I am going to give him one more chance and he has ducked three times.
“Once you’ve ducked three times, bro, there is nothing more to say. He ducked, that’s it, bro ducked for sure.”
It remains to be seen whether Lopez will attempt to defend his belt against Chorley’s Catterall or if he will vacate the title, with his team recently saying that they were assured the mandated fight would not be called.
