There are some concerts where you go in knowing you’re going to hear the hits. Then there are concerts where the first few songs make you realize just how well those hits have held up.
Brooks & Dunn’s show at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Michigan on Sept. 24 was the latter.
More than 35 years after Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn first joined forces, the duo still sounds remarkably close to the Brooks & Dunn that country fans have been listening to since the early ’90s. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum even calls Brooks & Dunn the best-selling duo of all time, noting that their career has produced 20 No. 1 hits.
After seeing them live, it’s not hard to understand why.
Pine Knob Was Packed With Country Fans
David Lee Murphy opened the show, and by the time Brooks & Dunn took the stage, Pine Knob was packed with country music fans who clearly knew exactly what they had come to hear.
Brooks & Dunn’s 2026 Neon Moon Tour made its stop at the Clarkston, Michigan, venue on Sept. 24, with Murphy and Willow Avalon on the bill.
Kix Brooks took a moment during the show to talk about how much the duo enjoys coming to Michigan, pointing out that it’s obvious just how much country music is loved here.
He wasn’t wrong.
From the first notes of “Brand New Man,” the crowd was fully in it. People sang along to pretty much everything, whether it was one of the enormous hits or a song that hadn’t been played on the radio in years (not that many of those exist).
And then there was “Neon Moon.”
Ronnie Dunn Still Has A Buttery Smooth Voice
At one point, Ronnie Dunn joked that he was recently in Nashville with a sore throat, and his doctor apparently warned him not to get too carried away with the long note in “Neon Moon.”
Naturally, he got carried away.
The song is already one of those country classics where the audience knows every word, but Dunn handed the big moment over to the crowd before delivering the long note himself in spectacular fashion.
It was one of the best moments of the night, partly because it showed just how little Dunn has changed vocally. His voice was clean, smooth, and instantly recognizable. There was no trying to reinvent songs that don’t need reinventing. He simply sang them the way fans have always known them.
Kix Brooks was equally good, adding the energy and musicianship that have always made the duo’s sound work. His harmonica playing was a particular highlight throughout the night.

They Played Pretty Much Everything The Crowd Came to Hear
The setlist was essentially a tour through Brooks & Dunn’s greatest hits.
“Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”
“My Maria.”
“Neon Moon.”
“Red Dirt Road.”
“Brand New Man.”
They also worked in “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You,” “Hard Workin’ Man,” “Only in America,” “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” and several other favorites. The Pine Knob setlist ultimately stretched to 17 songs.
“Boot Scootin’ Boogie” predictably turned the place into one giant dance floor, while “My Maria” had the crowd singing along from beginning to end.
But “Red Dirt Road” might have been one of the most satisfying songs of the night simply because it sounds exactly like the kind of song that belongs in a big Michigan amphitheater on a late-summer (okay, early Fall … I’m in denial) night.
There was nothing complicated about the show. Brooks & Dunn know what people came to hear, and they delivered it. There was even a big, beaming moon on display in the sky, which made for some immaculate vibes during “Neon Moon.”
Brooks & Dunn Still Sound Like Brooks & Dunn
That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give the show.
We’ve all heard songs from the ’90s that sound different when the artist performs them decades later. Sometimes the arrangements change. Sometimes the vocals do. Sometimes you’re left realizing that the version you loved on the radio exists mostly in your memory.
That wasn’t the case here. Brooks & Dunn sounded like the records.
Dunn’s vocals were buttery and clean, Kix’s playing was crisp, and the entire band sounded tight without making the songs feel overproduced. There was enough energy to make the show feel current without losing what made the songs so good in the first place.
Brooks & Dunn released their debut album, Brand New Man, in 1991. It produced four consecutive No. 1 country singles, including “Brand New Man,” “My Next Broken Heart,” “Neon Moon,” and “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”
Those songs are now more than three decades old. You wouldn’t know it from the crowd at Pine Knob. And you certainly wouldn’t know it from the guys onstage.
