As modern superhero cinema leans heavily on visual effects and massive crossover spectacles, actor Nicolas Cage isn’t shying away from sharing his critique of the genre. While discussing the evolution of comic book adaptations, the Spider-Noir star likened the MCU’s reliance on big fight sequences to pro-wrestling entertainment.
Cage made the comments while speaking at the Fan Expo. He noted that he sees “50-plus” otherwise intelligent and gifted actors putting on “ridiculous outfits” and getting ready for a fight.
Cage said, “Let’s face it, it is cutting all to the fight.” He added that it is “hard for me not to be reminded” that the MCU is becoming a “well-funded and glorified WWE.”

The MCU has built its multi-billion-dollar brand around high-profile team-ups and top action climaxes. Its releases routinely feature heavy CGI, intricate costuming, complex stunt coordination, and multi-character battle sequences designed to serve as narrative peaks.
Cage has taken a different route with Spider-Noir, which premiered on Prime Video and MGM+ in May 2026. The series features him as an older version of the Spider-Man variant, navigating the criminal underworld as a private investigator in 1930s New York. Cage previously voiced the character in animated hits Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Unlike Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films, Spider-Noir is not part of the MCU. Sony produces the series for MGM+ and Prime Video. The series also uses a film noir-inspired aesthetic, with episodes available in both black-and-white and color versions.
This gives Cage’s character a unique visual style that differs from the colorful superhero spectacle often associated with Marvel Studios.
Cage’s remarks come as he takes on a Marvel character himself, though his comments specifically target the broader blockbuster style associated with the MCU.
