Resident Evil is a smash hit, and Zach Cregger, who also made Barbarian and Weapons, looks to continue his streak—this time with an original film said to skew more sci-fi than his usual horror fare. It’s called The Flood, and a big piece of the puzzle just fell into place: Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence will star.
Deadline reports that Lawrence has come aboard the film, which has a release date of August 11, 2028. Cregger will write and direct his own story. We don’t have an official plot description yet, but Cregger has been dropping hints; earlier in September, he told Deadline that the idea for The Flood came to him in a rush amid his eagerness to work with Steven Spielberg, whose Amblin Entertainment is among its producers.
“I was watching this movie, and somebody in the movie was entering an abandoned spaceship,” Cregger explained. “And my wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. Maybe there’s something here.’ And then this character goes into the ship, and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them.”
“And I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?’ And it’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes. I just knew what it could be; I think I probably stood up and was like, ‘I have it!’ It was a total ridiculous moment, but I love it.”
We’re excited to see Lawrence lead The Flood, which sounds like a far better sci-fi showcase for her talents than the problematic Passengers.
