Derrick Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history at just 22 years old, but the former Chicago Bulls superstar now admits that his relentless pursuit of greatness came with a personal cost.
Looking back on the early years of his career, Rose revealed that he spent three years almost completely sacrificing his social life because he believed that was how his idol, Kobe Bryant, approached basketball.
“I didn’t enjoy anything, bro,” Rose said. “I didn’t go out to eat with family, with friends like that. No movies like that. None of that. No concerts.”
Rose was determined to become one of the best players in the world, and Bryant’s legendary work ethic had become his blueprint. He believed that reaching the highest level required total dedication, with little room for vacations, entertainment or spending time away from basketball.
The problem was that Rose had built his understanding of Bryant’s lifestyle around an assumption.
“Because I was totally locked in to thinking that I had to follow what Kobe was doing,” Rose explained. “Thinking Kobe was not enjoying himself, not going on vacations, not doing any of that. So I felt tricked in a way.”
That mindset helped define Rose’s extraordinary rise. After winning Rookie of the Year in 2009, he developed into one of the NBA’s most explosive guards and led Chicago to a league-best 62-20 record during the 2010-11 season. He averaged 25.0 points and 7.7 assists that year, earning the MVP award at an age no player had ever achieved it before.
But while his basketball career was flourishing, Rose was missing out on experiences he later realized he did not necessarily have to sacrifice.
His perspective changed during a trip to the Philippines with Bryant in his fourth year.
For the first time, Rose saw the Lakers legend enjoying himself away from basketball. After spending years imagining Bryant as someone who never relaxed, the experience caught him completely off guard.
“My fourth year, I ended up going to the Philippines with him. I saw him relax,” Rose recalled. “I’m like, ‘Oh, you was tricking me the whole time.’ I dedicated three years, three years, thinking you didn’t do shit.”
Seeing Bryant unwind was almost unsettling for Rose, who had modeled so much of his own lifestyle on what he thought the five-time NBA champion was doing.
“To see you actually out here just chilling, it kind of fucked me up,” Rose admitted. “But I couldn’t take it personally because he didn’t even know I was admiring him like that.”
