While generative technology remains one of Hollywood’s most fiercely debated topics, Ben Affleck isn’t shying away from using machine learning behind the camera. Speaking about his upcoming Netflix political thriller, the filmmaker and actor admitted that AI played an active role throughout the production process.
In an interview with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, Affleck discussed AI’s usage in his upcoming movie, Animals. The actor said, “I used [AI] for lots of things in that movie. I’m a little bit hesitant to point out what they are — or even talk about it — because in my business, we’re trying to foster the illusion of reality, right?”
“It’s sort of like if you went to a magic show and the magician walked out and said, ‘Just before I start, I want you to know there’s another bunny under here.’ You know, it’s sort of ruined, right? But yes, we did use it, and in fact, I thought it was a good example (of how to use AI ethically) because it’s a very human movie.”
Affleck previously discussed using AI as a post-production tool to improve the technical and visual-effects side of filmmaking and some creative aspects. In 2022, he founded InterPositive, a company that develops tools for filmmakers.
Affleck sold his AI company to Netflix earlier this year for nearly $600 million. The streamer plans to provide access to InterPositive’s AI technology to filmmakers and creative partners working with the platform for upcoming productions.
Ben Affleck’s Animals brings a human cast to an AI-assisted thriller
Despite the high-tech AI production tools, Animals relies on a star-studded cast. In the movie, Affleck stars as the lead alongside Kerry Washington. The ensemble also includes Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Christopher Woodley, Matt Gerald, Jacob Estrada, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Steven Yeun.
The official synopsis of the movie reads, “When their son is kidnapped, an LA mayoral candidate and his wife scramble to raise the ransom while making choices that could tear their world apart.”
Animals arrives in select theaters and streams globally on Netflix on October 9, 2026.
