LeBron James has yet to play a regular-season game for the Philadelphia 76ers, but his impact on the franchise is already showing up far beyond the basketball court.
Since James announced his move to Philadelphia in July, the Sixers have experienced a surge in sponsorship value, ticket demand and merchandise sales that has quickly turned his arrival into an economic story of its own. The clearest example came this week, when the team announced a new multiyear jersey patch partnership with Bloom Energy. The annual value of the agreement is reported to be more than $30 million, making it one of the two richest jersey patch deals in the NBA.
Additionally, LeBron’s new Sixers jersey has become the most sought-after jersey in the league, and his move to Philadelphia produced Fanatics’ strongest 48-hour merchandise response for any athlete changing teams in its database.
The ticket market has reacted just as dramatically. StubHub says the 76ers have gone from 22nd in NBA ticket sales to first for both home and road games, with sales running far ahead of last year’s pace. Searches for Sixers games have also exploded, accounting for a dramatically larger share of NBA ticket interest than they did a year ago.
Even Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has openly talked about the effect James could have on the local economy.
“You’re going to have 41 home games with LeBron in South Philly, every game is going to be a destination for people to come,” Shapiro said in July, adding that he expects the move to be “really big for Philadelphia.”
That enthusiasm is not difficult to understand. James remains one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, and his presence creates value that extends into hotels, restaurants, local businesses, sponsorships and tourism. One economic consulting firm has projected that his first full year in Philadelphia could generate hundreds of millions of dollars in regional economic activity, though such projections are estimates rather than guaranteed outcomes.
Inside the organization, the effect is being felt immediately. Tad Brown, CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which operates the Sixers, said James’ basketball stature naturally carries over into the business side.
“From a basketball perspective, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, to ever play,” Brown said. “So he’s going to make that impact on the organization, and then from an economic perspective, all that stuff follows.”
Philadelphia will open the regular season on October 20 against the defending champion New York Knicks, putting James and the Sixers immediately on one of the league’s biggest stages. The team is also scheduled for 34 nationally televised games this season, giving sponsors and commercial partners enormous exposure.
For the Sixers, James’ arrival was always about chasing a championship. But before the first meaningful possession has even been played, the financial side of the gamble is already producing results.
