The Detroit Pistons finally secured Jalen Duren on a five-year, $200 million contract, but getting the deal done reportedly required more than simply increasing the money.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Pistons owner Tom Gores personally became involved late in the process and played an important role in repairing a relationship that had deteriorated during months of difficult negotiations. On the day Duren had to make his decision, Gores reportedly communicated directly with the 22-year-old center and his family, promising to help create a “more positive Pistons experience” moving forward.
Duren’s camp had reportedly been frustrated by Detroit’s earlier offers, including an initial proposal that was far below the five-year, $200 million deal he ultimately received. The negotiations also briefly included discussion of a weight clause that could have required regular weigh-ins. That provision was never formally written into the final contract and was eventually removed from negotiations altogether.
Communication also appears to have been part of the problem.
Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon acknowledged during media day that he had not personally spoken with Duren during the summer while the negotiations continued. Although Langdon described that separation as part of the business side of contract talks, the prolonged silence contributed to the sense that the relationship between the two sides had become strained.
Duren had considerable leverage. He was coming off a career year in which he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, earned his first All-Star selection and made Third Team All-NBA while helping Detroit finish 60-22 and secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference. His production dropped in the postseason, however, and internal concerns about his conditioning and development reportedly became part of the contract discussion.
With the qualifying-offer deadline approaching, Duren still had the option of accepting approximately $9.6 million for one season and becoming an unrestricted free agent the following summer. Instead, he ultimately agreed to Detroit’s fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million offer.
Gores’ involvement helped bridge the gap. His message to Duren and his family was effectively an acknowledgement that the negotiations had become more contentious than the organization wanted. For a franchise attempting to build a long-term contender around Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson and Duren, keeping its young center was only part of the challenge. Restoring trust was just as important.
