Resident Evil

Amid celebrations for Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary, executive producer Jun Takeuchi revealed what future plans Capcom had for the Resident Evil series, including what will happen after the devs run out of games to remake.
“The current ‘Resident Evil’ series is being developed along two tracks: the numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series, while the remake series allows them to experience the past,” Takeuchi says (via RENEWS). This isn’t new information as Capcom has begun its huge remake project in 2019 (with the Resident Evil 2 remake) and has since gone on to give Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 facelifts as well, with the next scheduled to be Code: Veronica.
👀 Jun Takeuchi on the future of Resident Evil and the remake series eventually catching up with the numbered games.”The current “Resident Evil” series is being developed along two tracks: the numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series, while the remake series allows them to experience the past. Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since around “Resident Evil Village.” The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in “Requiem,” are also in preparation for a “crossover.”One of the reasons we regard “7” as a turning point for the series is that it was also the title where we began working on this kind of setup. At first, we included these elements with the sense that they were fan service, but users were far more delighted by them than we had imagined, and they even began analyzing the thoughts that the development team had privately kept to itself. So, as a series, we decided to respond to users’ expectations and pushed this setup further in “Village” and “Requiem.”(via: BIOHAZARD 30th Special Mook)September 30, 2026
It seems that Capcom is planning to finish remaking all the older games, perhaps pre Resident Evil 7 which Takeuchi deems as a “turning point” for the series. So if that’s true we may expect to see the following:
- Resident Evil 0: A yes from me, just to see Billy Coen again.
- Resident Evil: Will this be the first remake of a remake?
- Resident Evil: Revelations: This could go so hard in the hands of the RE remake team.
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2: I’m in just so Moira could get a better backstory.
And then there are the big two, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6; it was bound to happen eventually. It was perhaps wishful thinking that Capcom was going to let these games slip into distant memory. While I think there is a world in which Resident Evil 5 and 6 could actually be redeemed, both games will need a hell of a lot of work and reshaping for this to happen, and I’d hate to see the series falter on these two games yet again.
Let’s just say Capcom does successfully remake all of these games and the world doesn’t completely implode. All of these remakes will buy the studio about 12 years, with Capcom’s current schedule of releasing a remake once every two years. Now, 12 years is a long time, but it’s not forever, and I think Capcom intends to carry on forever. So what will happen when everything is remade? The cycle could just carry on with a Resident Evil 7 remake, it’d be about 21 years old at that point, or Capcom could have something else up its sleeve.
“Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens,” Takeuchi adds. “In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since around ‘Resident Evil Village.’ The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in ‘Requiem,’ are also in preparation for a ‘crossover’.

While I appreciate getting to experience older games and get a hit of nostalgia, I’m far more interested in what Capcom has got on the drawing board for its new games. Requiem managed to free the series from the shackles of Umbrella (kinda, sort of, it was good enough for me). But I would love to see more twists, new plot threads, and new characters. The world of Resident Evil is far too interesting to get bogged down in remakes.
