John Leguizamo has shared an update on his role in an upcoming film, revealing that he will have a prominent part in Miami Vice ’85. The actor described himself as having “kind of the lead role” while discussing the movie and his involvement in it. John Leguizamo is returning to the Miami Vice world decades after making one of his earliest on-screen appearances in the original series. The actor first appeared in an episode of Miami Vice in 1986. Now, nearly 40 years later, he is set to appear in Miami Vice ’85 alongside Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan, in which he says he plays a significant role.
Leguizamo looked back at that early career milestone while discussing his upcoming Career Achievement Award. “That was my first thing on film. It was my first check. I was starving to death. I was able to eat,” he told PEOPLE.
The actor now finds himself returning to the franchise at a very different stage of his career. Reflecting on the gap between his first appearance and the upcoming film, Leguizamo said, “And now here, 40 years later in my 60s, I’m in Miami Vice playing kind of the lead role in the film. It’s pretty exciting.”
Leguizamo is also attached to another upcoming project from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. During the same interview, he said, “I’m not allowed to say anything except that it’s a Daniels movie, [and] we’re having an amazing time. The cast is unbelievable.” The film, which also stars Matt Damon, Sandra Oh, Sean Kaufman, Michael Gandolfini and Charles Melton, is being kept largely under wraps. Details about Leguizamo’s character and the story have not been revealed.
