Oscar-winner Michael Douglas has finally set the record straight on a decades-long rumor. It was rumored that on the set of Basic Instinct, Douglas punched the director, Paul Verhoeven, causing him to bleed and be rushed to the hospital.
The Ant-Man actor denied the rumor in his memoir, One Helluva Ride. However, he admitted that he had a heated argument with the director at the time. During this argument, Verhoeven experienced an unexpected medical emergency.
Douglas recalled, “Suddenly, a torrent of blood exploded out of his [Verhoeven] nose. I dashed after him—where was he going? We needed the on-set doctor! Outside, a scary amount of blood continued to stream from behind his hands. He was immediately rushed to the hospital… It was serious—an artery had burst, and he was hemorrhaging.”
The rumor started because many people on set heard the actor and director argue. The Oscar-winner explained, “I might have wanted to hit him, but I swear I never touched him. I would never do such a thing to my director! There had already been more than enough threats of fistfights around this film.”
Paul Verhoeven also denied that Michael Douglas punched him
Douglas’ words were backed by Verhoeven as well, as a representative of the director denied the rumors. According to Entertainment Weekly, the rep said, “Mr. Verhoeven states that there was no physical altercation — just general tension on the set due to a difficult scene.”
Moreover, the Oscar-winner’s Basic Instinct co-star, Sharon Stone, also recalled the tension on set. In an interview with The New Yorker, she stated, “Verhoeven ended up in the hospital — his sinus thing ruptured, and he couldn’t stop having a nosebleed. There was tremendous pressure on that set.” Furthermore, Stone praised Douglas and expressed her gratitude to him. The actress called him a feminist and a humanist. She added, “He really cares about everything he does.”
