Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy addressed whether John Stewart‘s newly forged ring could turn yellow in the DCU series. The show’s creator explained why the writers never considered a Yellow Lantern twist despite Sinestro’s involvement in crafting John’s lantern.
Will John Stewart be the Yellow Lantern with his newly forged Lantern?
John Stewart will not become a Yellow Lantern based on the events of the Lanterns Season 1 finale. In an interview with Brandon Davis, showrunner Chris Mundy confirmed the writers never discussed making Stewart’s ring yellow. Despite Sinestro forging the lantern from fear-charged water on a devastated alien world, Stewart’s ring glowed green when he charged it in the finale.
Davis posed the question directly during their conversation. “I thought for sure when John put that ring on at the end of this, it was going to glow yellow,” he said. Mundy’s response was unequivocal. “No, we never did. That’s actually a really good idea. That never came up,” Mundy said. He acknowledged the team “obviously talked about that lantern and that water and that fear and what does it do and what are the ramifications of it.”
The show built toward the possibility across several episodes. In Episode 7, Sinestro forged the lantern on Antaan’s devastated homeworld using water charged with both will and fear energy. The series also established that a fear-inducing gas drove an entire alien species to destroy itself on that planet. Sinestro’s direct involvement in creating the lantern made the yellow ring outcome a logical expectation for viewers familiar with the source material.
Stewart ultimately charged the ring while reciting his own custom oath in the Season 1 finale, “Dirt and Stars.” He then declared himself Earth’s new protector and summoned Guy Gardner to assist him going forward.
The ring’s green glow signaled Stewart’s alignment with willpower rather than fear. However, Mundy’s acknowledgment that the team discussed the fear element’s ramifications leaves the door open for future exploration. The Yellow Lantern Corps, powered by fear, remains one of the most iconic parts of Green Lantern mythology in DC Comics.
HBO has not yet confirmed whether Lanterns will return for a second season, leaving the lantern’s full implications unresolved.
