Halo: Combat Evolved is controversially now playable in your browser on mobile devices for free, and the port includes 128-player online multiplayer plus a host of new gameplay features.
Halo: Combat Evolved is one of the most important console FPS games of all time. Released as an Xbox launch title in November 2001, it proved that fast, fluid FPS gameplay wasn’t exclusive to PC.
Over the years, Halo: Combat Evolved has received PC ports, remasters, and even a remake. However, in September 2026, arguably its most problematic port was released. Halo: Combat Evolved became free-to-play in a web browser, complete with 128-player multiplayer, made possible by fans … although it’s a miracle that the port is still standing.
Halo: Combat Evolved’s browser port has evolved with a major update
As shared in a gameplay clip from X user CustomRider05, the Halo: Combat Evolved browser port created by BanTrev, is now playable on iOS and Android smart devices.
It also features new additions such as matchmaking, a friends list, lobby chat, optional cheats, and playable characters. In this gameplay clip, CustomRider05 plays a mission in Halo: Combat Evolved campaign as a Covenant Grunt, otherwise known as an Unggoy. Players can change characters mid-game, including a Flood Elite, Jackal, Hunter, Guilty Spark, Captain Keyes, and more.
Some of the available cheats include infinite ammo, invincibility, no gravity and super jump. The browser port has also been optimised for mobile, with on-screen controls similar to those you’d find in an officially released mobile game. Surprisingly, the mobile version appears to run rather smoothly.
These types of browser ports are popping up all over the place but they are copyright infringement, with Rockstar Games working quickly to remove a free playable PC version of GTA V, so we expect Halo: Combat Evolved to eventually suffer a similar fate.
What is the community saying about Halo: Combat Evolved on mobile?
“Breaking the record for 128 players yesterday was seriously the most fun with Halo I’ve had in years,” declared X user PatrickTmoney.
“It’s done, today we got 128 players in a single match in Halo,” tweeted bnununana.
“The impossible has been done: reverse engineering Halo CE. 128 players in Blood Gulch,” said lostbutlucky, sharing a gameplay clip with all 128 players.

In an attempt to avoid Xbox’s wrath, the browser port is now requesting that all players provide proof of ownership of Halo: Combat Evolved such as an image of the disc.
It is not illegal to mod a game. It is illegal to distribute game files. Proving you have Halo: Combat Evolved probably isn’t going to do much here though as ultimately, the browser port is still distributing game files illegally and breaking copyright law.
It’s our reccomendation that you just support developers and stick to the normal, legitimate versions of this titie. It’s available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles. It’s also available with select Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers at no extra cost.
Here’s our verdict on recent remake Halo: Campaign Evolved
“The main game was exceptional, and the Remix mode adds so much replay value for both single-player and multiplayer playthroughs. It was only the prequel missions that I found to be a tad disappointing, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say they were bad or unenjoyable. I just wish they were a little bit more,” we said in our review, scoring it an “exceptional” 9/10.
“In many ways, I still think it’s a shame that we had to go all the way back to the beginning to get a truly excellent Halo game, but Halo: Campaign Evolved does give me hope for the future of this franchise.”
