Stephen Curry has made more money from NBA contracts than any player in league history, but his latest deal with the Golden State Warriors was not about squeezing out every possible dollar.
Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension with Golden State, a contract that reportedly came in roughly $20 million below what he could have pursued under different circumstances. Asked about leaving money on the table, Curry kept the answer simple.
“I’ll be alright.”
That perspective makes sense when viewed against the scale of his career. Curry has signed six NBA contracts with the Warriors, beginning with a rookie deal worth about $12.7 million and eventually progressing through multiple max-level agreements. Including future salary, his career NBA contract earnings are set to reach roughly $650 million.
Even Curry acknowledged how surreal those numbers can sound.
“Sometimes I realize this is not a real, real place, the NBA,” he said. “The gratitude and understanding, the numbers we’re talking about. Team valuations and the salary cap, max numbers and all that.”
For Curry, the decision also brought him back to one of the most important contracts of his career: the four-year, $44 million extension he signed in 2012. At the time, repeated ankle injuries created uncertainty around his future, and that deal later became one of the most team-friendly contracts in NBA history as Curry developed into a two-time MVP and the centerpiece of a dynasty.
“It goes back to my very first contract, the 4 [year] for $44 [million] that I signed,” Curry said.
His point was that contract decisions are always made with the information available at the time. Money matters, but so do context, family, basketball fit and long-term priorities.
“You sign a contract based on information that you have and what you feel like is right,” Curry said. “Ayesha, my family, everybody’s on the same page of understanding what I have in front of me and the controllables of playing good basketball, staying with the Golden State Warriors and trying to end this thing the right way.”

Curry’s latest contract is not simply another financial milestone. It is also another commitment to the only NBA franchise he has ever played for. After championships, MVP awards, record-setting shooting and more than half a billion dollars in salary, Curry’s priority now appears less complicated than ever Stay in Golden State. Keep playing at a high level. And finish the story on his own terms.
