John Cena has finally addressed the burning question fans have been asking since Fast X hit theaters: will Jakob Toretto come back from the dead? The actor opened up about his future in the franchise on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and his answer might surprise you.
John Cena on return possibility in Vin Diesel’s Fast Forever
Speaking with host Josh Horowitz, Cena didn’t exactly campaign for a comeback in Fast Forever. When asked if he felt optimistic about another installment, he kept it real: “It’s so beyond my control.” That doesn’t mean Cena has any bad blood with the franchise or its leading man. He speaks glowingly about Vin Diesel, calling him “literally my big brother” and “one of my closest friends.” The two chat regularly, though Cena insists business rarely comes up. “We never talk about business,” he said. “There’s so much more to talk about with Vin.”
Cena also acknowledged the elephant in the room — Jakob’s sacrificial exit in Fast X. Rather than pushing to reverse that decision, he sees the narrative value in staying gone. “Maybe that was the way for my character to end their story,” he explained. “Maybe it would help make the next one, if there is one, more meaningful if I didn’t show up.” Furthermore, instead of angling for a return, Cena chooses gratitude. “Dude, I got to be a Toretto,” he said. “I look in the rear view and see the Toretto cross. Dope.”
As for Fast Forever itself, Vin Diesel has been developing the finale for years. He’s called the script “the best” he’s read in decades and hopes to start filming in December 2026. Universal has set a March 17, 2028 release date, bringing the saga back to Los Angeles where it all began.
Whether Jakob returns for that final one remains uncertain. But if John Cena’s comments tell us anything, he’s at peace either way. Fast Forever will roll into theaters with or without him and the Toretto family legacy will endure regardless.
