Teofimo Lopez is ready to take his battle over Jack Catterall’s mandatory status to court while chasing a massive unification bout with Ryan Garcia. That legal threat sets up a drawn-out conflict over a defense the WBA already mandated.
Chris Mannix reported on Saturday’s DAZN broadcast of Floyd Schofield versus Lucas Bahdi that Lopez is appealing the ruling. According to The Ring, he will enter a courtroom if necessary. Nothing has been filed yet, but the stance proves Lopez refuses to let Catterall dictate his schedule.
The priority remains Garcia in February or during Cinco de Mayo weekend. Both champions want the matchup, which would unify Lopez’s WBA welterweight strap with Garcia’s WBC belt.
Catterall has zero interest in stepping aside. He earned the interim title by defeating Shakhram Giyasov in May, only to watch Rolando Romero jump the line and lose a majority decision to Lopez on August 22. Catterall suddenly sees history repeating itself.
“There’s not one ounce of me that will say yes to any step aside to let any unification happen,” Catterall told Inside The Ring.
That stance shuts down the simplest path to a deal. Lopez cannot rely on step aside cash to clear the lane for Garcia, who just defended his belt with a September stoppage of Conor Benn.
A massive unification makes commercial sense for the division. Still, granting an exception forces Catterall to the sidelines again while the champion chases a bigger payday. The mandatory tag means very little if sanctioning bodies routinely shelf it for money fights.
The October 22 deadline keeps everyone on the clock. Lopez’s appeal has not overturned the ruling, and talking about legal action does not guarantee victory.
Teofimo wants Garcia. Catterall demands his rightful shot. The WBA must decide if its own order actually holds up.
That hesitation tells the whole story. If Teofimo truly believed Catterall was light work, he would take the December date, collect a routine payday, clear the mandatory obligation, and march straight into a massive Cinco de Mayo clash against Garcia with zero red tape.
Instead, he is threatening legal action to dodge him. Catterall does not bring massive global box office numbers, but he brings every tool needed to embarrass Teofimo and take that belt. Teofimo knows that if he drops a decision to Catterall in December, the mega fight with Garcia evaporates instantly. Chasing injunctions and court appeals instead of just getting in the ring looks like pure self-preservation.
