Coventry star Bobby Thomas has been tipped to become the first player from his side to play for England since 1998 following his performance in the Sky Blues’ 4-1 win over Newcastle.
The 25-year-old centre-back, who stands at a towering 6ft 4in, has been one of Coventry’s top performers since their return to the Premier League at the beginning of the season.
He produced a number of valuable defensive contributions in the victory over Newcastle, including a goal-saving block with the scores at 1-0. And even though the Sky Blues scored four goals at the other end, Thomas was given the Player of the Match award by Sky Sports – with fans calling on Thomas Tuchel to call him up for England.
Bobby Thomas tipped for England call-up
“I’d be having a look at Bobby Thomas in the next England games, Mr Tuchel,” one fan wrote on social media.
“Serious questions need to be asked about Bobby Thomas playing for England,” a second stated.
While a third predicted: “Bobby Thomas to get an England cap within a year.”

“Bobby Thomas is brilliant,” broadcaster Olivia Buzaglo wrote. “Every time I watch Coventry he blocks absolutely everything. Always in the right position. Class.”
No active Coventry player has received a senior cap for England since Dion Dublin in 1998 – some 28 years ago.
Bobby Thomas responds to Jamie Carragher praise
Thomas came through the youth ranks at Everton and Crewe Alexandra, before joining Burnley aged 16 and signing his first professional contract with the Clarets.
He only made one appearance for the Lancashire club, in the League Cup, before joining Coventry for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth £2 million in the summer of 2023.
Thomas was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for last season and has carried that form through into the top flight of English football.
After the match, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher compared his defensive attributes to that of a prime John Terry – and that praise was put to Thomas himself by Patrick Davison during his post-match interview alongside team-mate Ellis Simms.

“That’s a nice comparison, isn’t it?” he replied. “I’ve been called worse! But yeah, I appreciate that. It’s just, I feel like to sniff out the danger, you’ve just got to be doing that week in, week out in training. And then when the game comes around, you just back how you’ve been training and then you go and produce moments, blocks, and important events in a game.”
When it was suggested that his adaptation to the Premier League had been ‘seamless’, he said: “Yeah, I wouldn’t say seamless, but I’m enjoying it. It’s clicking into gear a little bit, and it’s enjoyable now. Tough start [Coventry lost their first four games] – we believe we’d turn it around a bit and the last two performances have been really positive, in the right direction. It’s been good.”
