Brandon Figueroa plans to jump on Tomoki Kameda early this Saturday in Las Vegas, targeting the challenger’s habit of taking rounds off. The WBA featherweight champion spotted zero urgency in Kameda’s recent bout with Angelo Leo, giving him all the incentive he needs to ramp up the pace from the opening bell.
“He wasn’t engaging. He was just letting Leo do his thing,” Figueroa said to Sean Zittel. “It was in his backyard. I didn’t see any urgency.”
That approach plays directly into Figueroa’s hands. When an opponent goes passive, it gives him free rein to crowd the pocket, plant his feet, and unload heavy fire without fighting through resistance. Kameda risks spending long stretches pinned down while the champion batters his guard downstairs and upstairs.
Figueroa even threw out a wild figure of 2,000 punches during fight week. While obviously hyperbole, it sends a loud message: he wants Kameda burning energy from second one.
“I just don’t want to wait,” he said. “I just want to start off strong, finish strong.”
His goal is simple. Start fast, stay on the gas, and finish with authority instead of feeling things out.
Kameda does not have to match that insane output blow for blow, but he cannot just sit there. He must deliver sharp counters, stay on his toes, and fire first to interrupt the champion’s rhythm. Hiding behind a high guard only invites trouble. Even deflected shots sap your legs, deplete your stamina, and leave you too exhausted to punch back when the body assault begins.
Look at how Nick Ball folded under similar relentless volume. Brandon never gives guys breathing room. With Kameda showing so little activity in his last outing, surviving that kind of heat looks like a brutal task.
The veteran challenger has never been stopped in his career, a record Figueroa is fully aware of. Rather than wasting time setting traps, the champion wants to test that chin and ribcage right away.
Kameda needs to bring genuine fire on Saturday. Standing around and letting Figueroa work will turn this title shot into a painful, draining beating.
