Former UFC flyweight contender David Dvorak has expressed his concern regarding the lack of drug-testing outside of the premier promotion.
‘The Undertaker’ was released from the UFC back in 2023 after suffering his third loss in a row against Steve Erceg. That marked the end of just a three year run in the promotion which saw him go 3-3.
Since then, the 34-year-old has returned to growing Czech MMA promotion, OKTAGON, where he has fought twice since his axing from the UFC.
And after his last fight against Zhalgas Zhumagulov, which was for the OKTAGON flyweight title, David Dvorak has called for more rigorous testing in the promotion.
David Dvorak says Zhalgas Zhumagulov hit him harder than anyone else as he hints at foul-play
Dvorak and the ex-UFC star clashed last December at OKTAGON 81, and the Kazakh won the fight via a doctor stoppage in the third round. Ahead of his return to the cage this coming Saturday at OKTAGON 95, where he will take on Aaron Aby, Zhumagulov has reflected on his loss.
The 34-year-old admitted that he has never been hit so hard, crediting ‘Zhako’ as the hardest-hitter he’s ever faced. But that has led him to wonder whether there was any foul-play at hand, as he revealed that since he has joined OKTAGON, he hasn’t been tested once.
“The fight with Zhalgas was very hard for me,” Dvorak admitted during an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow. “Zhalgas was the most different fighter I have ever met, he had the strongest punch I have ever received, he was a little bit weird… I hope I will fight him again in the future. Zhalgas is like the Topuria brothers, he’s short with awesome power. That’s why I sparred with bigger and stronger guys because some of the flyweights outside of the UFC are not in the USADA or VADA (drug-testing).
“They’re bigger and stronger, it’s different. I fought Manel Kape, many other guys, but no one had a punch like Zhalgas. He was 70kg (not long after the fight), that’s not normal for flyweights. It’s possible (that he was on PEDs), they don’t test you for EPO, Testosterone or peptides, you can be on steroids. I saw OKTAGON testing and they only test for stimulants before the fight… I’ve never been tested in OKTAGON, because I’m a clean guy,” he continued.
Dvorak is hopeful that a win over Aby this coming Saturday will be enough for him to earn a rematch against Zhumagulov, but he doesn’t plan on asking for more transparency regarding drug-testing if he does fight the 38-year-old again.
Zhumagulov is hoping to re-sign with the UFC, though, after going 5-0 since leaving the promotion, with his last fight being a split decision loss to the current champion, Joshua Van.
