This is the live blog for Joaquin Buckley vs. Mike Malott, the welterweight main event for Saturday’s UFC Edmonton fight card at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Currently No. 10 in the UFC welterweight rankings, Buckley found himself on the cusp of a title shot last year after six consecutive wins after returning to the 170-pound division. However, Buckley lost all that momentum by losing to Kamaru Usman at UFC Atlanta, and then dropped a decision to Sean Brady in his rebound fight in May. Now, Buckley is at risk of falling out of relevancy at welterweight if he loses three in a row.
The fighting pride of Ontario, Malott currently holds the No. 13 spot in the UFC welterweight rankings, with designs on moving up and making a real title run. The 34-year-old fighter in on a four-fight winning streak and coming off a TKO win over Gilbert Burns in April to set up this opportunity to move into the top 10.

Preamble
Well, another card that is nearly setting records for finishes and all that. Definitely just a coincidence that this is happening every other month now.
Still, co-main event was a meaningful fight, and now we know Blanchfield will never fight for a belt. Plus, this main event is a pretty good one. Let’s enjoy.
Pre Fight
Malott walking out to Sum 41, as always. This man really is the perfect Canadian avatar. And his brother is a hockey player. It’s so perfect.
Buckley dancing and has what sounds like gospel music as his tunes. I’m not a big gospel listener, so I don’t know it off the top of my head. He’s really carrying himself very confidently though.
Malott is 3 inches taller, but Buckley as a 3-inch reach advantage. Malott is a slight favorite.
Joe Martinez gets things going. This crowd is very lively. Malott is a hero, Buckley is the enemy and they let both know how they feel.
The two men meet in the middle for final instructions and do NOT touch gloves, as Buckley rejected it. It’s go time!
Round 1
Buckley out in southpaw, Malott in orthodox. Lotta feints out of Buckley early. Malott staying far away for now. Around a minute in, Buckley trying a lunging punching combo. Maybe one of them lands but Malott retreats. Few seconds later Malott tries his own, to similar results. Very measured pace early.
A collision and Malott lands a left as they come together. Buckley returns the favor a few moments later. A battle of footwork in there as both men alternate leading. Everything is in short bursts though as we hit the halfway mark.
Buckley tries to work in, but Malott circles away. Then there’s a heavy exchange but neither man lands clean. But shortly after, Buckley blocks a kick and lands a good counter. Malott presses him back and goes high with a kick that Buckley blocks. Boos arise from the crowd. Back and forth we go, give and take. Neither man winning the footwork consistently. Malott keeps backing out from the Buckley charges.
Malott showing a ton of patience, waiting to land a big shot and then try to run out. But Buckley finally gets him with a leaping right hook that sends Malott back.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Buckley.
Round 2
Buckley with some urgency to Round 2, backing Malott up immediately. He’s open though and eats a couple, but Buckley forces a clinch against the fence. Malott turns him though and now Malott is putting some good knees to the body here. Buckley with double underhooks but he’s so much shorter than Malott is holding position with his head and landing good knees.
Buckley starts pummeling and lands a good knee. But Malott reclaims the grips and lands his own. Lot of hand fighting here but Malott is winning this position. Buckley finally breaks out to space.
Malott lands a GOOD right hand as Buckley comes in, but Buckley eats it.
OHHHH! Buckley stepped in for an overhand and Malott PLANTS him with a knee!!!!!!!! Looked like he was going for a kick but the knee landed PERFECTLY and that was LIGHTS OUT!!!
Welcome to the Top 10, Mike Malott!
Official Decision
Mike Malott def. Joaquin Buckley via KO (knee) — 2:32, Round 2
Post Fight
Malott being extremely humble and likable in his post-fight speech.
He shouts out everyone, then says “I might be soft-spoken, but I’m hard-hitting.” Then he talks about his brother, the professional hockey player.
Malott refuses to call anyone out, but says he wants someone in the top 10 at least, or hopefully the Top 5.
