Lily Allen has confessed that she once saw appeal in the so-called tradwife movement, but no longer feels that way.
The UK pop star is enjoying her continued career resurgence with the success of her 2025 comeback album West End Girl, which narrates the collapse of a marriage and, Allen has said, is heavily inspired by her relationship with ex-husband David Harbour – although she called it a mix of “fact and fiction”.
In a new interview, Allen – who shares two children with her first husband, Sam Cooper – spoke about her previous views on relationships and how that has shifted over the years, along with her attitude towards sexual pleasure for women.

Allen, 41, said that in both her marriages she focused mainly on being at home, cooking for her family and overseeing homework, things she had not experienced herself as a child while being raised by her parents: Welsh actor and comedian Keith Allen, and English film producer Alison Owen.
The tradwife movement, a social media-fuelled trend where women embrace strict, sexist gender roles like full-time homemaking, cooking from scratch and submitting to their husband, “appealed to me in the past… I don’t think it does now,” she told The Times.
“There’s this myth someone’s going to pick you up and make everything OK. I haven’t seen much evidence of it.”
In West End Girl, Allen sings of going into a marriage in which she and her children move into a New York townhouse with her new husband. When she is offered an exciting role in a play, her husband gaslights her then tells her he wants an open relationship.

Over the course of the record, Allen’s narrator attempts to please her partner, growing increasingly miserable, before discovering she has been lied to and finding evidence of her husband’s infidelity in another apartment.

One of the most talked-about songs on the album was “Pussy Palace”, in which Allen sings about finding a stash of sex toys her husband has been using with other women.
In her interview with the Times, the pop star explained that previously she has prioritised her partners’ sexual pleasure over her own: “I grew up feeling that I was a vehicle for male pleasure,” she said. “I never really considered my own needs. My priority has been to make sure I don’t get rejected or abandoned. Therefore, I’m prioritising my partner’s enjoyment because the first thing I’m protecting is my safety.

“Maybe it is controversial to say it … You tell some men they’re not satisfying you and it’s terrifying what the potential reaction could be. Understandably, we avoid that conflict at all costs. I don’t think I’m unique. I think what a lot of us are doing when we’re having sex is making sure he’s OK, because otherwise you’re going to be left alone and be some old spinster.”
To that end, Allen announced this week that she has partnered with Lovehoney to release a new range of sex toys, including a butt plug with the same polka dot design that features in her album artwork. It also includes a new model of the Womanizer vibrator that Allen previously credited with “changing her life”.

Allen told The Times that the success of West End Girl and her ongoing tour had given her a “sense of agency and accomplishment”.
“I feel like I’m here: a single mum supporting two teenagers on my own,” she said. “I don’t need to be taken care of any more. There’s definitely a sense of liberation in that. There’s always going to be a part of me that wants a happy ending — but also, not really. I’m starting to see through that.”
West End Girl received near-unanimous critical acclaim upon its release, with The Independent hailing it as a “brutal, tell-all masterpiece” in its five-star review. Allen is currently touring the record in New Zealand and Australia.
