We polled well over 70 musicians to help put together our 100 Best Bands of All Time, and as Band Week continues, we’re sharing some of our contributors’ personal ballots. We met up with Brandi Carlile on the Songwriters Hall of Fame red carpet event earlier this year, and asked her to name Mount Rushmore of Bands.

The first two bands out her mouth she suggested were barely worth mentioning: both Queen and U2, she said, “are gonna be on there,” regardless of whether or not her votes counted. Gracious as she is, though, she expounded on why they earn their spot — especially as one is her “favorite band.”

Actually, all but one of her picks made our final list, and all within the top 25. The one that unfortunately missed is no less deserving of recognition, of course, there are just only so many spots on a list of 100. To that point, perhaps Carlile was spot on when she said Indigo Girls were “a very underrated folk band.” (Is a duo a band? Are they disqualified based on rubric alone?)

Check out which four groups Brandi Carlile put on her personal favorite bands list in the video above, and read her full quotes on each below. Then, see where her picks landed on the final list, and snag some suggested listening vinyl ahead or in our shopping guide of 25 Essential Albums by the Greatest Bands of All Time.

For more ballots, see responses from Queen Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan,Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, and Fred Armisen.

Queen

“You’re not gonna have a problem putting them on that [list]. That’s probably my favorite band.”

U2

You’re gonna have U2 on there as well. Because Joshua Tree changed the course of rock ‘n’ roll music. Everything sounded different after that. It was unbelievable. Daniel Lanois’ work on that, you can hear the trajectory leading to it and where it went. It’s changed everything about rock ‘n’ roll.

Indigo Girls

I’m gonna say the Indigo Girls because I think they are a very underrated folk band who have also delved into grunge and rock ‘n’ roll and R&B. An incredible amount of versatile and really queer music that has been such an important building block for artists like me.

Fleetwood Mac

I’m gonna go with Fleetwood Mac because that is a complicated love affair of profound songwriters, and their ability to overcome what made them different to make one of the most cohesive and powerful bands of all time. It’s incredible.
