“Teofimo has pushed back and said, ‘We don’t think we should have to fight Jack Catterall. We’d like to try and make another fight,’” Hearn said to iFL TV.
“We’ve had multiple dozens of assurances in writing through the resolution,” Hearn said. “We’ll let the WBA do their work, and I’m sure they’ll act appropriately.”

Eddie Hearn is laying down the law for Teofimo Lopez: defend the WBA title against Jack Catterall, or hand over the belt. According to Hearn, the champion’s camp is actively trying to bypass the mandatory defense in search of a different matchup.
Hearn expects the sanctioning body to hold the line, pointing out that Catterall has written guarantees backing up his spot. He admits a clash with Ryan Garcia would bring Teofimo a much fatter check. Still, chasing bigger money elsewhere does not erase a champion’s mandatory duties.
“Teofimo has pushed back and said, ‘We don’t think we should have to fight Jack Catterall. We’d like to try and make another fight,’” Hearn said to iFL TV.
That stance keeps Catterall stuck in waiting mode while the champion shops around. Hearn contends there is zero room for debate on who should be next in line.
“We’ve had multiple dozens of assurances in writing through the resolution,” Hearn said. “We’ll let the WBA do their work, and I’m sure they’ll act appropriately.”
Those paperwork guarantees actually need to deliver a date in the ring. A mandatory ranking means nothing if a sanctioning body tosses it aside the second a bigger payday pops up.
“Teofimo Lopez will have the decision to fight Jack Catterall or vacate the belt,” Hearn said.
“I get it. It’s not a fight that pays you as much money as Ryan Garcia, but it’s a good fight that pays you a lot of money, and it’s your mandatory challenger. So do as champions should do and make the fight.”
Hearn obviously wants to secure his own fighter a shot at the gold, but his point cuts right to the heart of championship boxing. If Teofimo wants to chase other names, nobody is stopping him, provided he gives up the strap that comes with mandatory responsibilities. The real test is whether the WBA actually steps up and enforces the rules.
Teofimo knows Catterall brings almost zero upside compared to the danger involved. Catterall is an awkward, gritty southpaw who makes opponents look terrible and rarely generates massive commercial numbers.
Risking a monster gate and pay-per-view windfall against Ryan Garcia for a grueling night against Catterall makes no business sense from Teofimo’s perspective. The WBA’s dilemma is familiar, but the legal stakes make this one especially messy. Hearn and Matchroom rarely bluff when they claim to hold paperwork and written assurances.
If the sanctioning body grants Teofimo a special permit or looks the other way while he walks into a Garcia clash, Catterall has concrete grounds to challenge them in court, much like other contenders have done when mandatory guarantees were violated.
On the flip side, stripping Teofimo means the WBA forfeits their cut of the colossal sanctioning fees generated by Garcia vs. Lopez. Sanctioning bodies rarely choose principle over a percentage of an eight-figure revenue pot.
What usually happens in these corners is a desperate push behind closed doors for step-aside money. The WBA will likely pray Garcia’s side or Riyadh Season cuts Catterall a fat check to sit tight and take the winner. If Catterall refuses to play ball, the WBA will have to decide whether protecting their credibility in front of a judge is worth tossing away millions in sanctioning fees.
