Get those sticks ready.
After 15 years of rumors, wishful thinking and impatient boxing fans, Electronic Arts (EA) Sports is officially bringing its beloved Fight Night video game franchise back from the dead.
EA launched a new social media account dedicated to the series on Tuesday and delivered the announcement longtime fans have been waiting to hear.
“To everyone who stayed in our corner: Fight Night is coming back,” EA wrote, along with a brief teaser video.
The account’s biography was also updated with another message: “Back into the ring.”
That’s pretty much all EA is willing to share right now.
The company did not reveal the official title, release date, platforms, cover athlete or roster for the upcoming game. Nevertheless, confirmation alone is a big deal considering the franchise has been gathering dust since Fight Night Champion was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March 2011.
Fight Night Champion featured a cinematic story mode centered around fictional boxer Andre Bishop, along with a stacked roster of legends that included Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran.
Despite the game’s popularity, EA shelved the franchise and eventually shifted its combat sports attention toward mixed martial arts. EA Sports UFC launched in 2014, and the company has produced six installments in the series, including UFC 6 earlier this year (review here).
Boxing fans were eventually given Undisputed to help fill the massive void, but the return of Fight Night immediately gives EA a powerful—and nostalgic—competitor in the boxing video game market.
There will now be plenty of questions regarding who appears in the game. Boxing has no single league or players’ association, meaning EA must negotiate individual licensing deals with fighters, promoters and rights holders to construct its roster.
The timing is certainly interesting, though. Saudi Arabia has become a financial powerhouse in boxing, and its Public Investment Fund recently led the massive $55 billion purchase of EA. However, the company has not announced whether the new game will have any connection to Riyadh Season, The Ring magazine or Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.
For now, all we know is that Fight Night is finally returning.
After 15 years, that’s enough.
