The future of the Portland Trail Blazers has become increasingly uncertain as negotiations between new owner Tom Dundon and local officials over the franchise’s long-term commitment to the city have reportedly reached a serious impasse.

According to Bill Oram of The Oregonian/OregonLive, Dundon reacted angrily after Portland officials presented a potential price tag exceeding $1 billion for allowing the franchise to leave the city without facing legal action.

The dispute centers on the Trail Blazers’ existing lease agreement at the Moda Center, which runs through 2030 and includes a requirement to maintain the arena at a “first-class” standard. City officials consider that provision an important safeguard against relocation, while the team’s ownership reportedly views it as a potential source of costly litigation.

Dundon allegedly demanded that officials establish a financial figure to settle those obligations should the franchise decide to relocate after its current agreement expires. When the city responded with a figure exceeding $1 billion, the billionaire reportedly reacted furiously.

“He went crazy,” one source familiar with the negotiations told OregonLive.

The disagreement reportedly led to canceled meetings, including discussions involving NBA representatives who had planned to help facilitate negotiations.

In another unusual development, local real estate investor Jeff Swickard reportedly arranged for a private jet to transport Dundon and his son from Chicago to Portland, enabling a meeting with local business and political figures. Dundon subsequently agreed to a separate meeting with Portland City Administrator Raymond Lee and deputy Donnie Oliveira.

Beyond the potential relocation costs, the two sides remain divided over the length of a new lease.

Oregon legislation requires a 20-year commitment as part of a publicly supported renovation agreement, but Dundon is reportedly seeking an option that would allow the ownership group to buy out its obligations after just 10 years.

That disagreement threatens a proposed $586 million renovation package for the Moda Center, including $365 million in state funding, $120 million from Portland and $101 million from Multnomah County.

The clock is ticking. Without an approved lease agreement before the end of 2026, the state funding authorization is set to expire. Oregon lawmakers have indicated that renewing the financial commitment would be unlikely.

Dundon, whose ownership group acquired the franchise for $4.25 billion, has publicly maintained that keeping the Trail Blazers in Portland remains the priority. Fellow owner Sheel Tyle has similarly defended the organization’s efforts, insisting that Dundon is working hard to reach an agreement.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has also emphasized his desire to keep the franchise in its longtime home, previously describing a potential departure from Portland as a failure.

For Trail Blazers fans, however, the latest developments raise uncomfortable questions about the organization’s future.

A franchise that has represented Portland since 1970 now finds itself caught between a costly arena renovation, competing financial demands and an ownership group unwilling to commit to the proposed long-term agreement without additional flexibility.

And with hundreds of millions of dollars in public funding potentially disappearing within weeks, the negotiations have become much more than a disagreement over a basketball arena. They could help determine whether Portland remains the Trail Blazers’ home for decades to come.
