Yaxel Lendeborg’s NBA career is just one game old, but the Golden State Warriors rookie has already found himself in a heated confrontation with one of basketball’s biggest superstars. And judging by his postgame comments, he has absolutely no intention of backing down from Luka Dončić.
What started as an intense individual matchup during Wednesday night’s season opener quickly turned into a trash-talking battle, complete with a technical foul, a spectacular half-court buzzer-beater and some remarkably harsh criticism afterward.
The Los Angeles Lakers ultimately cruised to a convincing 127-105 victory over Golden State at Crypto.com Arena, with Dončić leading the way with 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in just three quarters.
However, the Slovenian superstar’s most memorable moments came during his confrontation with Lendeborg.
The 24-year-old rookie, selected 11th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, was tasked with defending Dončić and repeatedly challenged the Lakers guard throughout the second quarter. The two exchanged words on several occasions, with Lendeborg eventually receiving a technical foul for his verbal provocations.
According to Lendeborg, he repeatedly told Dončić that he couldn’t score against him, while becoming increasingly frustrated with what he considered excessive complaining to the officials.
Dončić, meanwhile, appeared to enjoy the confrontation. Having already scored 23 points in the opening half, the Lakers superstar delivered the perfect response just before halftime. From beyond half-court, Dončić launched a desperation shot that banked in at the buzzer, sending the crowd into a frenzy. He immediately turned toward Lendeborg and pointed at the rookie, adding another memorable moment to their increasingly personal battle.

The confrontation, however, continued long after the final buzzer.
Speaking to reporters following his NBA debut, Lendeborg made it clear that his opinion of Dončić had changed dramatically.
“Watching all the whining and complaining. I lost all respect, man,”
the Warriors forward declared, criticizing the six-time All-Star for what he described as excessive flopping, foul-baiting and constant appeals to referees.

Lendeborg explained that he had previously admired Dončić’s offensive brilliance from watching highlights, but facing him in person had left him with a completely different impression.
The rookie insisted that his frustration wasn’t necessarily about the fouls themselves, but rather Dončić’s reactions to the officials and his subsequent trash talk. He even joked that the Slovenian’s only basket scored directly against him had been the spectacular half-court bank shot.
Dončić took a considerably more relaxed approach afterward, suggesting that he had deliberately avoided engaging too much because he wanted to reduce his technical fouls this season.
“He was talking crazy,” Dončić said, explaining that he was pleased to have avoided receiving a technical foul himself.
On the court, the Lakers made sure the confrontation would be remembered alongside an impressive team performance.
Newcomer Walker Kessler enjoyed a sensational Lakers debut, recording 26 points and nine rebounds while shooting a perfect 12-for-12 from the field. Austin Reaves contributed another 23 points as Los Angeles took complete control with a dominant 36-16 third quarter.
Golden State, playing without several important contributors, struggled to keep pace after a competitive opening period. Stephen Curry finished with 23 points, while Lendeborg contributed 12 points and three rebounds in his first regular-season appearance.
The Warriors ultimately had no answer for the Lakers, who led by as many as 35 points in the second half.
For Dončić, it was an emphatic start to his first full season as the undisputed centerpiece of the post-LeBron James Lakers. For Lendeborg, it was a memorable introduction to the NBA’s physicality, star power and psychological battles.
