A 27-year-old woman has been charged after a police officer was shot while attending an incident in Nottingham.

Aisha Zaman, from the Hyson Green area of the city, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.

She has been remanded into custody and will appear before Nottingham magistrates court on Friday.

The officer, who is in a stable condition in hospital, had approached two people at a bus stop at 4.50am last Sunday when he was shot in the foot, Nottinghamshire police said.

A weapon was recovered and a large crime scene cordon put in place around Angel Row in the city centre.

Several other people have been arrested in connection with the incident including two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have also been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. Both suspects remain in police custody, the force added.

DCS Rich Bull said: “We would just like to take this moment to thank the public. The outpouring of support for the injured officer has been greatly appreciated.

“We continue to support him as he undergoes further treatment in hospital and are keeping him and his family fully informed of the developments in this investigation. He has asked for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Police Federation sent its best wishes to the officer and said it was a “stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day”.

Following the incident, Neghat Khan, the leader of Nottingham city council, said she was “deeply shocked and saddened”.

She said Nottingham was a “safe city” and praised the bravery of police and community protection officers, adding: “My thoughts and full support are with the injured police officer, their family and their colleagues across Nottinghamshire police.”
