Before he was “just Ken”, Ryan Gosling was moonlighting as one half of spooky rock duo Dead Man’s Bones. Now, he’s getting the band back together, just in time for Halloween.
Back in 2007, the Canadian actor, 45, and friend Zach Shields formed the monster-themed indie band, going on to release their self-titled debut album with the Silverlake Conservatory’s Children’s Choir in 2009.
The duo last performed together in 2010, but on Thursday (22 October), a video was uploaded to the Dead Man’s Bones Instagram page teasing new music to be released on 27 October.
The post, which was a collaboration with Gosling’s wife Eva Mendes, features a hypnotic video of a man who tells the viewer: “Dead man’s bones must wait to rise, from the house where shadows cry.
“All of this must change October 27th, when our ghosts must leave our world for this, to dance with us at twilight time, and bring your hand to lie in mine.”
Mendes, 52, also reshared the clip on her own feed, writing: “He came through on his promise to me.”
A former child star who released his first solo album in 2000 aged 20, Gosling first met Dead Man’s Bones bandmate Shields in 2005 back when he was dating Rachel McAdams and Shields was dating her sister.
The pair first bonded over their love of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion rollercoaster, with an interest in all things spooky providing inspiration for the band.

For the band’s 2009 debut album, both Shields and Gosling, who had received his first Oscar nomination the previous year for Half Nelson, learnt to play all the record’s instruments themselves.
“The goal was to figure it out,” Gosling told NME while reflecting on his time with the band earlier this year. “There was a quality to [that approach] that we liked, but I’m sure we had people come in and help make [the album] actually work.”
In keeping with the spooky theme, the duo played a handful of gigs at churches, synagogues and cabaret venues to promote the album, and performed a string of shows in 2010, but not have performed live since.
Gosling shared his desire to release a second album back in 2010, and said in 2023 that he would “never say never” to a comeback.
The Drive star would go on to show off his vocal skills on the Barbie soundtrack with “I’m Just Ken”, a song that was nominated at the Oscars.
