Jon Bon Jovi has further explained the extent of his vocal cord issues that left him unable to sing.

In a new interview, the 64-year-old musician revealed that at his worst, he couldn’t even sing “Happy Birthday” after he underwent a risky surgery to repair an atrophied vocal cord in 2022. Across four years, he worked with vocal coaches until he felt ready to return to the stage.

Bon Jovi told the Australian program A Current Affair this week: “I didn’t lose faith, but had [my doctor] told me it was going to be four years, I might’ve contemplated saying, ‘It’s been great’ [and leaving his office],” he said.

“Because the process was so damn long and I would see the progress, but it was incremental. It was inches. I couldn’t sing ‘Happy Birthday.’”

At the time, Bon Jovi was off the road and the future of his career remained up in the air.

He said his voice now sounds “phenomenal” after years of work with vocal coaches and exercising his voice, and he could perform “tonight, no problem.”

“I’ve gone through hell and I would not, could not, compromise the legacy,” he said. “I could not, would not go out and hold the mic out to the crowd. Holding ourselves to a standard that we’ve had for some 40 years now, it’s important to me to be the best we can be.”

“I realized that it took four years. That four years was my doing. I don’t go out [on tour] after the two years. People were saying, ‘It’s fine, let’s go.’ Ask the promoter Paul Dainty how many times he’s had on a piece of paper a tour booked and I’ve said, ‘No, can’t do it. Just don’t do it.’ And after the four-year process I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s ready.’”

Earlier this year, Bon Jovi performed a residency at Madison Square Garden and sold-out shows in the U.K. and Ireland.

On the eighth night of a nine-show residency in New York this July, the singer ended his concert after just a few minutes due to a sinus infection but promised fans a rescheduled performance.

Bon Jovi recently added seven new dates on their Forever Tour starting next March, including stops in London and the group’s home state of New Jersey.

The “Livin’ on a Prayer” rocker previously told People that he was initially confused when a doctor told him “one of the cords was literally atrophying.”

“I’d often joked and said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose was my finger. I never did anything to hurt the cords,” he insisted. “I didn’t have any excesses. I’m a trained vocalist. I’ve practiced the craft.”

He praised his bandmates’ unwavering loyalty, saying: “They never doubted [me] and never looked for work or decided to retire. The sacrifices that each one of them have made to be there for me is on a whole ’nother level.”
