Sylvester Stallone has revealed that his most lucrative financial returns have stemmed from his art collection rather than his acting career.
The Rocky star said he made millions from investing in art back in the 1980s. Spending his Hollywood earnings on the paintings four decades ago paid off big time as the art skyrocketed in value in the following years.
Appearing on The Overlap podcast, Stallone said his collection includes works by Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, alongside contemporary painters. He said some pieces in his home are now worth in excess of $40 million each.
“That’s my weakness. Art,” Stallone said. “I do [own] a lot more contemporary artists who are becoming the new [greats] … George Condo, Rashid Johnson, they’re this generation’s Picassos.”
Asked to estimate the value of his Picasso and Warhol paintings, he responded: “About $40 million … for just one.”
Although astute investments made 40 years ago yielded substantial gains, Stallone admitted that he regrets parting with several works too early as prices later surged.

Reflecting on his past sales, he said: “I had a collection at one time. I think if you’re ever going to make your great fortune, sans technology [sic] … In the middle ’80s, I could buy a Monet, that would be $130,000.
“You buy a Picasso, you buy a Renoir … $110,000, Francis Bacon, $75,000 … The point is I would then sell it for $3 million.

“Ten years later, 12 years later, guys come back and try to sell it to me for $75 million. I’m not joking.
“So the point is, if you’ve got art, don’t sell it unless you’ve got to pay the mortgage because it’s appreciating. It doesn’t cost, you don’t have to feed it.
“I had a collection that you can’t replace because of the shift in finances. It’s unbelievable.
“There’s this one Monet, it’s called the Hackstacks, I paid up like $110,000. The guy wanted to sell it back to me for like $130 million.”
Stallone said that his next investment venture will center on collecting luxury vintage timepieces.
When asked if significant profits can be made from prestige watches, Stallone replied: “Oh yeah some of these go for 10 times [what you paid for them] … That’s where I’m going next.
“The vintage Rolex store by John Silver, it’s vintage watches, they only sell old Rolexes and for some reason I’ve fixated on a watch called the Stella … but they’re hand painted and I’ve got just about the whole collection.”
