David Moyes hailed a “great result” for Everton as they secured back-to-back wins over Newcastle with a 1-0 triumph at St James’ Park.
Monday night’s Premier League clash took place just four days after the Toffees claimed a 3-1 victory over the Magpies in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and Moyes’ side were able to secure three points on Tyneside.
A first half lacking in clear-cut chances from both sides saw Everton take the lead just four minutes after the restart when Tyrique George’s low effort squeezed underneath Lukas Hornicek.
Thierno Barry then reacted quickly to pounce on the loose ball and stab home for his fourth league goal of the campaign.
Moyes admitted recording successive wins over the Magpies in such a short space of time was “not an easy thing”, but was full of praise for his side’s display as they claimed three points.
“They are so good in what they do as they give everything they’ve got,” the Everton boss said.
“They’re a brilliant group of players and they’ve had it tough as well. They want to keep winning and they’ve found it difficult with the way things have gone, but they’re pulling it out and doing their best to be in all the games.
“It’s never easy… we beat Newcastle on Thursday night and to beat them again today is not an easy thing to do for any club and this level.
“To come here and get a good win tonight was a great result for us.”
Victory ends a three-game winless run for Everton in the Premier League and sees them move into seventh in the standings, but Moyes was also pleased to earn a first away win in their league campaign.

He added: “We’ve actually done quite well in some of the games getting draws in difficult away games, but we’ve not picked up a victory and last season we had a great run of results away from home.
“So I was hoping to pick it up tonight and thankfully we did, clean sheet and got the goal that counted.”
Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle admitted his side need to “do things better” following a disappointing performance.
The Magpies struggled to threaten throughout the match and were frustrated further when Jacob Ramsey was dismissed with two yellow cards in quick succession at the death to leave the Tynesiders 13th in the table.
Asked what the solution is, Jaissle said: “We need to analyse that now in detail.
“It’s also clear that I have the responsibility and I also take that as the manager of this club, and we need to do things better.
“There were many things there, not only in possession, which was not on the level we expected to see.
“Also out of possession, we wanted to press them high, we wanted to stretch them as soon as possible and make also a clear distinction if that was overplayed from their position that we defend in a compact block, but nothing between.
“Again, it was not much seen today on the pitch.”
