Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s company Allen Media Group, has acquired VOD rights to the documentary feature “The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan.”
The documentary follows Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor Gary Sinise‘s decades-long mission to honor America’s fighting men and women, support injured veterans, and stand beside Gold Star families. It’s a calling that was inspired by Sinise’s work playing a Vietnam vet in “Forrest Gump.”
“The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan” will be available on North American digital HD internet, DVD, cable, and satellite platforms starting on November 10, 2026. It features interviews with Sinise, as well as Jay Leno, Tim Allen, Joe Mantegna, Chip Foose, and Mykelti Williamson. Sinise is also known for his work in films such as “Ransom” and “Apollo 13,” as well as the TV series “CSI: NY.” He starred in “George Wallace,” winning an Emmy.
The film also follows Sinise as he grapples with personal tragedy after his son, Mac, dies of cancer at the age of 33. The documentary looks at how Sinise is motivated by the credo: “We can always do a little more.” “The Ballad of Lieutentant Dan” was directed by Steve Mitchell Beebe and produced by Bud Brutsman.
“’The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan’ looks into the world of actor and humanitarian, Gary Sinise, and explores how his commitment to veterans and first responders created a community that supported him through a difficult period in his life,” said Beebe. “This is a story about selfless kindness and, I hope, will inspire all of us to do what we each can to uplift our friends, neighbors and communities.”
Freestyle Digital Media negotiated a deal to acquire the documentary directly with the filmmakers.
