The early matches during Wednesday’s Champions League fixtures featured two of Europe’s biggest clubs and lots of fireworks.

In Greece, Real Madrid beat AEK Athens with two goals in 14 minutes late in the second half for a 3-2 victory.

Aboubakary Koita put AEK up after 12 minutes — a goal that was answered by Jude Bellingham 20 minutes later with a beautiful back-heel.

With 15 minutes left, Stavros Pilios started an attack and followed his pass, which helped put him in position to put home the go-ahead goal and have AEK dreaming of a giant-killing.

Those hopes were soon dashed. Kylian Mbappé leveled in the 78th minute and Federico Valverde’s thunderstrike in the second minute of stoppage time gave Real Madrid the victory.

Liverpool lost its first game in the competition 3-2 to Fenerbahçe. A match that was level at halftime thanks to goals from Trey Nyoni and Mason Greenwood exploded into drama over the final 20 minutes.

The Reds reclaimed the lead in the 69th minute on Alexander Isak’s goal. But that was answered by Fenerbahçe’s Archie Brown, who delivered an equalizer four minutes later.

The Turkish side wasn’t done, however, as they snapped a 10-match winless streak in the Champions League.

In the 79th minute, Vedat Muriqi out-muscled three Liverpool players to win a header and beat Alisson for the go-ahead goal and the three points.
