Twenty-eight flights have been targeted in a string of bomb threats across the continent this week, according to airlines and authorities

A string of bomb threats has affected dozens of passenger flights across Europe this week, prompting diversions, emergency landings and security checks, as well as military escorts in some cases.

At least 19 incidents were reported on Thursday alone, bringing the total number of cases to 28. No explosive devices, hazardous substances or suspicious materials have been found onboard any aircraft.

What flights were targeted on Thursday?

An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome was diverted to the Evreux military base in northern France following a bomb threat on Thursday, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s office said. The base was put on high alert, with the French authorities ordering its military to intercept the aircraft because its pilot “didn’t cooperate as expected with the authorities,” the statement said.

Finnair said that two of its flights, en route from Helsinki to Vienna and Rome, respectively, faced bomb threats. Both landed safely at their destinations, although the one flying to Rome received a fighter jet escort following the alert.

Three Ryanair flights, all bound for the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, received threats as well. Two of them – one from Copenhagen and the other from Madrid – landed at their destination, while the third one from London was diverted to Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second largest city. All three received escorts from the Bulgarian Air Force, according to the nation’s military.

A Ryanair flight from Porto was also checked by the police after landing at its destination in Milan following another threat.

Spanish authorities reported receiving three bomb threats in under 20 minutes targeting two Air Europa departures from Madrid to Paris and four inbound Iberia flights from Rome and Milan. The flights that were due to depart from the Spanish capital were halted for an inspection.

In Poland, a LOT flight from Warsaw to Paris was stopped as it was about to take off because of a threat and the passengers were transferred to another aircraft. Another LOT flight from Warsaw landed safely in Brussels following a bomb alert.

Two EasyJet flights, from Newcastle and Glasgow, were met by police upon their arrival in Prague over a “security-related matter,” an airline spokesperson told Reuters.

Wizz Air confirmed that a flight from Milan to Bucharest received a bomb threat but landed safely without diverting.

An Aegean Airlines flight from the Greek city of Thessaloniki received a bomb threat after it had already landed at its destination in Milan, the company’s spokesperson said, adding that nothing suspicious was found during the check.

What incidents were reported earlier?

An Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna was diverted to Sofia on October 18 following a bomb threat in one of the earliest incidents mentioned in connection to the latest bomb scare wave.

A LOT flight from London to Warsaw was diverted to a different airport near the Polish capital after a bomb threat on November 3. The Warsaw-Modlin Airport where it landed was also temporarily shut down on Tuesday morning as the aircraft was inspected.

Four Ryanair flights were affected by bomb threats on the same day, prompting searches in Italy, Spain and Bulgaria.

A bomb threat was also reported on a SAS flight from Copenhagen to Warsaw on November 3. The aircraft landed safely at its destination.

Two Wizz Air flights received bomb threats on Monday and Tuesday. The one from Milan to Sofialanded safely at its destination on Tuesday, with another one from London to Sofia diverted to Budapest and escorted by a Hungarian fighter jet the day earlier.

How threats are made

Several airport officials told the media over the past days that they had received anonymous emails with the warnings. The Czech police confirmed to Reuters that such messages were sent to various European airports. A Prague airport representative told CNN that the airport had received one such email.

AP also reported that it was able to review a copy of an email containing threats to Rome-bound planes provided by an airport official. A representative of another European airport also confirmed receiving one to the news agency.

Who could be behind it?

Neither the authorities, nor the airlines made any official statements regarding who could be behind the threats. No groups have publicly claimed responsibility for the disruptions.

“National investigations remain ongoing,” European Union Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas told journalists on Thursday, adding that it was “too early to draw conclusions on whether the reported incidents are linked.”

The UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the incidents as “malicious hoax threats.”

According to AP, an email it was able to review was sent on behalf of a self-described “anti-feminist” group. A European airport official told the news agency about another email coming from a group calling itself anti-feminist and using similar language.

Some media outlets sought to add a political dimension to the story by claiming that Russia could be responsible for the “hoaxes.” Daily Mail ran a story on Wednesday citing a host of “experts” arguing that Moscow could be behind the scare.

Reuters also mentioned in its report on the issue that “most of the countries affected supported Ukraine.”

Moscow has repeatedly dismissed speculations that Russia could attack any NATO or EU nations as “nonsense” and “political schizophrenia.”
