Justin Timberlake is clearing up speculation about whether one of his most famous singles was inspired by his ex, Britney Spears.

In a new interview ranking his best songs, the 45-year-old Prince of Pop addressed decades-old rumors that his 2006 single “What Goes Around…Comes Around” was written about Spears, whom he dated from 1999 to 2002.

“I think, maybe I should dispel a rumor at this point, which has gone around forever, which is like — it’s not a personal story from mine, it’s actually a personal story from a friend that I asked permission to [use],” Timberlake explained to Complex in the interview, shared Thursday.

He continued: “He was just going through it, and he was telling me what happened, and I said, ‘Do you mind if I write about this?’ And I quote, my friend said, ‘Yeah, torch that b****, what goes around comes around.’

“And I was like, ‘I have to go, thank you.’ He was like, ‘What?’ I was like, ‘I got it.’ And I hung up the phone, and so I had the idea,” he said.

Timberlake said the song was written in “damn near 20 minutes.”

“It was just flowing,” he recalled. “Then you put the [music] video with it. It was a 10-minute video we shot for it. This just hit on all cylinders for me.”

He went on to say that he would consider the song in the top two of his entire career.

The hit song was the third single that Timberlake put out for his 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds, and it became his third number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fans at the time believed that the song had been a follow-up to Timberlake’s 2002 smash hit “Cry Me a River,” which was widely believed to be aimed at Spears after their breakup. Not only was the song put out with a music video featuring a woman resembling Spears, but Timberlake himself acknowledged in 2011 that the song had been written after the end of their relationship.

Spears, 44, admitted in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me that she had cheated on Timberlake with choreographer Wade Robson after accusing Timberlake of being unfaithful multiple times.
