President Donald Trump hosted a press briefing, following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which led the event to be canceled.
“That was very unexpected but incredibly acted upon by Secret Service and law enforcement,” the president told reporters shortly after 10:30 p.m. He called their speedy response “a very beautiful thing.”
Trump said that one officer was shot, but was protected by a “very good bulletproof vest.” He described the assailant as a “thug,” a “lone wolf” and a “whack job.”
The shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. inside the Washington Hilton. After shots rang out, Secret Service agents swiftly ushered Trump and other Cabinet officials away from the dais. Attendees still inside took cover underneath tables.
The assailant, who opened fire near the hotel screening area, was quickly apprehended, and the president, the first lady and “all protectees” are safe, the Secret Service said in a statement. Trump posted photos of a shirtless man detained on the hotel floor.
The event will be rescheduled in the near future, the president said.
The Hilton, located a short distance away from the White House, is where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. Trump has been subject to several assassination attempts.
Shooter identified as 31-year-old California man: report
The assailant has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, according to The New York Times, citing two law enforcement officials familiar with the matter.

A ‘visibly shaken’ teen girl was among those sheltering after the shooting
A “visibly shaken” teenage girl who was attending the event with her father was among those sheltering after the shooting, said The Independent’s D.C. Bureau Chief Eric Garcia, who was on the same table.
“I was huddled down with a dad who had brought his daughter. She was visibly shaken up and scared by what had happened.
“She was a teenager. Her dad kept on assuring her and saying nothing bad would happen to her as long as he was there.”
Garcia described the moments after the gunshots were heard.
“Almost immediately after we began hearing pops, everyone began to duck. People were nervous and worried about the worst. This was, coincidentally, the same hotel where 25 years ago, John Hinckley Jr. shot and seriously wounded President Ronald Reagan.
“Cabinet officials began to file out, starting with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, followed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Energy Secretary Chris Wright and EPA director Lee Zeldin.
“Education Secretary Linda McMahon filed out but then came back briefly.
“After the initial shock and terror, reporters began to work the room.”

Reporter in the room describes the shock and confusion as shots rang out
The Independent’s White House Correspondent Andrew Feinberg, who was at the dinner, described the shock and confusion as shots rang out behind the closed door next to his table just minutes after the president and first lady had taken their seats.
“The Color Guard had not been out of the room five minutes when five shots rang out from just behind the door closest to The Independent‘s table.
“I immediately saw something I have never seen in 10 years of covering the President of the United States: Secret Service agents, with weapons unholstered.
“As people began screaming and pulling at each other’s clothes while urging them to ‘GET DOWN, GET DOWN,’ security personnel began slamming the doors to Washington’s largest ballroom.
“I remained sitting, turning my head to the right to see POTUS and others at the head table being hustled out of the room.
“Most of the room was under the table when I saw a line of uniformed and other law enforcement, guns drawn, make their way from a side door into the center of the room.
“Quickly, dignitaries including most of the president’s cabinet were ushered out under guard.”
