Netflix’s live-action Gears of War movie just revealed a major detail that fans have been waiting to hear. Xbox’s chief content officer broke down what makes the franchise’s core story perfect for a Hollywood adaptation.
How Netflix’s Gears of War movie introduces Delta Squad
Netflix has announced a live-action Gears of War movie. Director David Leitch and writer Jon Spaihts will bring the beloved franchise to screens. Leitch previously directed The Fall Guy and Bullet Train. Spaihts wrote Dune: Part III, adding further blockbuster credentials to the project.
The film will tell “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity,” according to an official description, Entertainment Weekly revealed.
This approach grounds the adaptation in the franchise’s earliest storylines. It also introduces audiences to the squad’s formation against an overwhelming threat.
Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, highlighted the franchise’s emotional core. “The game really is about the bonds between teams. It’s about brotherhood at its core,” Booty said.
He also pointed to the studio’s guiding philosophy as creative inspiration. “When you go visit the studio, their tagline is ‘Never Fight Alone.’ So when you think about that for a dramatic narrative, it’s a pretty good starting point,” he added.
The Gears of War movie joins Xbox’s growing slate of Hollywood adaptations. Netflix is also developing animated series based on both Gears of War and Minecraft. Meanwhile, Amazon continues production on Fallout Season 3 and a live-action Wolfenstein show. Xbox currently has more than a dozen movie and TV titles in various development stages.
Asha Sharma, Xbox’s CEO, emphasized the brand’s entertainment ambitions beyond gaming. “Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Sharma noted. It seems Xbox aims to become the biggest entertainment company through these cross-platform expansions.
A release date for the Gears of War movie has not yet been announced.
