LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – JANUARY 24: Justin Gaethje of the United States (L) and Paddy Pimblett of England exchange punches during their interim lightweight title bout in UFC 324 at T-Mobile Arena on January 24, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Ian Maule/Getty Images) | Getty Images
Paddy Pimblett just saw Justin Gaethje become undisputed lightweight champion, and he’s feeling even better now about his own loss to “The Highlight.”
Gaethje had to get through Pimblett first to earn a crack at Ilia Topuria. He defeated the Liverpool native by unanimous decision in a competitive interim title fight at UFC 324 this past January and was subsequently booked for a unification bout against the undefeated Topuria at UFC White House. The historic event saw Gaethje seemingly do the impossible and bludgeon Topuria until his corner stopped the fight at the end of Round 4.
That fight put the whole lightweight division on notice, including Pimblett, who hopes to face Gaethje again someday especially after their first fight, which Pimblett claims was plagued by fouls.
“Weird to say, but Monday morning watching that, came in more motivated,” Pimblett said in a vlog. “I went five rounds with Gaethje and was pushing the pace to the very end. I didn’t quit. I kept coming forward trying to finish the fight. And I think I won 3 and 5, so he beat me 3-2. One of the judges agreed.
“And if a lot of different things didn’t happen in that fight like eye gouges and low blows and then faking low blows, then it would have been a different fight. We’ve got to get on with it now. No point crying over spilled milk. I just hope I get to fight again. As I say, he’s the undisputed champion now. I went five rounds with the undisputed champion of the world.”
If Pimblett wants a rematch with Gaethje, he has to get through Benoit Saint Denis first. Pimblett fights “BSD” at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas, and the winner will be in prime position for a championship opportunity. Following a two-fight slump in 2024, Saint Denis has rebounded with four consecutive victories and continued his streak of winning all of his fights by knockout or submission.
The Frenchman has overwhelmed several opponents with his mauling style, something Pimblett is aware of and not remotely intimidated by.
“We know BSD’s going to try and take me down,” Pimblett said. “We don’t know he’s going to try and take me down, but we try to be ready for all things. BSD takes most people down. I think he might be a little bit afraid to take me down because he knows I’ll submit him on the ground. Once I hit him with a few punches, a few kicks, knees, elbows, he’s going to revert back to default settings and them default settings for him are shooting takedowns.”
Even with an impressive performance at UFC 329, Pimblett won’t assume he gets the next shot at Gaethje, with Arman Tsarukyan and Charles Oliveira currently in the mix, as well as the remote possibility that Topuria is granted an immediate rematch.
Pimblett sees Tsarukyan as being next in line no matter who won at UFC White House, and he’ll revisit his own contender status after his fight with Saint Denis.
“To be honest, after the weekend, I don’t think it’s a No. 1 contender fight, but I think Arman’s probably still No. 1 contender,” Pimblett said. “But Justin said himself that Charles has beaten him before so he’d like to fight Charles again. Charles could end up getting the title shot. Perfect time to make Ilia vs. Arman because Arman’s been calling Ilia out for years.
“But there’s so many different variables in the lightweight division now, you don’t know. I’d love to beat BSD and get a rematch with Justin, but I can’t really demand that after a one-fight win streak, so we’ll just have to see what happens over the coming weeks.”
