A new forecast sees Supergirl taking yet another dip in its opening box office weekend. Over the last several weeks, the predictions for the upcoming DCU blockbuster have unfortunately continued to slip as the competition at the summer box office heats up. A Rotten Tomatoes prediction for this follow-up to David Corenswet’s Superman warned that it could receive a ‘Rotten’ rating on the site amid mixed reactions to the film across social media, and at the time of writing, it has indeed received a low 57% critics score from a total of 117 reviews so far. However, that’s only a part of the reason why Supergirl’s future at the box office is in jeopardy.
Toy Story 5 is predicted to beat Supergirl in its opening debut
One weekend forecast for Supergirl has the blockbuster earning only $38.5 million, or in the range between $34 million and $43 million, in its domestic opening weekend from June 24 to June 26. This is about a $10 million decline from a prediction last week that had it raking in $48 million instead.
This new projection comes from a June 24 analysis from BoxOfficeTheory, which explains why the film is “unfortunately continuing to move in the opposite direction.” It notes that the blockbuster is only expected to bring in $7 million on Wednesday and Thursday from various advance screenings, suggesting that Supergirl may not have the momentum to carry through to the weekend as originally anticipated. In addition to its low Rotten Tomatoes rating, compared to the ‘Certified Fresh’ 83% rating for the recent Superman reboot, the report points out that “superhero films are no longer treated like novelties by casual audiences in the way they were a decade ago.”
In terms of demographics, it observes that the film relies “primarily on older millennial and Gen X male comic book fans,” a crowd that would be similarly enticed by the compilation comedy flick Jackass: Best and Last that comes out on the same weekend as Supergirl. While the spunky cameo of Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in Superman generated interest in the film, “walk-up business and post-opening interest could prove modest in the current moviegoing climate” and the heavy competition against Minions & Monsters (July 1), Young Washington (July 3), Evil Dead Burn (July 10), and Moana (July 10) could take some of the wind out of Supergirl’s sails.
In particular, Toy Story 5 is expected to rake in $73.5 million in its domestic sophomore outing, nearly twice as much as this new box office prediction for Supergirl, potentially putting the superhero flick out of the top spot for its full theatrical run. Along with Moana and Minions & Monsters, the family-friendly options will be plentiful over the next three weeks.
That said, the report admits that its $34M to $43M range is below studio tracking, which has the film taking in $47 million to $50 million in its domestic start. According to Deadline on June 24, Supergirl is “expected to open in the upper $40Ms at 3,600 theaters stateside per presales, though tracking has had it of late in the $50M+ vicinity.” However, it likewise projects that Toy Story 5 will easily trump this with an $88 million to $96 million domestic haul this weekend.
The general consensus on Supergirl from critics is that the Craig Gillespie-directed film feels like a substandard James Gunn movie, be it in comparison to Superman or Guardians of the Galaxy. Some say that Gillespie doesn’t give Supergirl enough of a distinctive voice and tone, as much as the superheroine has a much different arc than her cousin, the Man of Steel, does.
On a better note, ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim scored the film a 7 out of 10 in his review, praising Alcock and Jason Momoa’s performances as Supergirl and Lobo but maintaining that “there are many superhero movies with better action, better comedy, and better needle drops.”
