Emma Roberts is reprising an iconic role from a classic teen movie in an unexpected sequel. The upcoming project is a TV series that will stream on Disney+ once it arrives.
What Emma Roberts movie is getting a Disney+ TV show sequel?
Disney+ has ordered a pilot episode for an Aquamarine TV series based on the 2006 film directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, as per Deadline. The series will see Roberts reprise her role as Claire Brown as a guest star. Roberts will also executive produce the series, along with Rosenbaum and producer Susan Cartsonis.
According to details obtained by Deadline, the pilot episode deals with a teenage protagonist, Coral, moving to a “dreamy seaside town” to unravel the truth behind her mother’s disappearance. In doing so, Coral discovers that her mother used to be a mermaid, “awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”
The pilot episode of the Aquamarine series will be written by Sarah Watson, who has penned several episodes of the Percy Jackson series on Disney+, Parenthood, The Bold Type, and more.
2006’s Aquamarine follows the characters played by Roberts and JoJo Levesque during summer vacation, when they discover a mermaid on the beach, played by Sara Paxton. Together, the trio set out to find and prove that true love exists within three days. The film was based on the eponymous 2001 young-adult novel by Alice Hoffman. It is the second adaptation of one of Hoffman’s novels to receive a sequel years later, following Practical Magic 2.
The original film received mixed reviews upon release and has since become a cult classic. Upon its release, Aquamarine grossed almost $23 million at the global box office. The film was Elizabeth Allen’s first feature film, with the filmmaker directing Ramona and Beezus, Careful What You Wish For, Sneakerella, and Purple Hearts in recent years.
There is currently no release date attached to Disney+’s Aquamarine TV series.
