Gervonta Davis is expected to return to action this year and Devin Haney is one name being mentioned for a potential fight, but it won’t be the first time that they have shared the ring, with one of their previous spars labelled as ‘crazy’ by Floyd Mayweather.
Davis was a Mayweather protégé early on his career and was signed with Mayweather Promotions, with ‘TBE’ guiding ‘Tank’ to world titles in the super-featherweight, lightweight and super-lightweight divisions before their split in 2022.
Since then, Davis has fought just four times in four years and is winless since June 2024, with external issues being the key reason behind this latest and extended stretch of inactivity.
Despite being in line for a shot at his old WBA lightweight world title against Floyd Schofield, it seems as though Davis could pursue honours in a different weight division upon his return, after ‘reaching out’ for a fight with WBO welterweight ruler Haney.
Haney claimed that belt back in November after a unanimous decision victory over Brian Norman Jr, having previously held world honours at lightweight and super-lightweight.
Haney sparred Davis as a 16-year-old in a viral sparring session and recalling that day, Mayweather admitted that it was ‘crazy work’, as per talkSPORT.
“Tank boxed Devin Haney and Devin Haney was in good shape, Tank wasn’t in good shape but they worked. It was some crazy work. Just with him and Devin working, it was crazy entertaining work at that particular time.”
Davis is touted to make his comeback in the autumn, and with Haney now looking like the frontrunner rather than Schofield, that means ‘Kid Austin’ is set to instead face Lucas Bahdi in a challenge for the vacant WBA lightweight crown.
