Two rare artifacts from the Battle of the Alamo, fully intact cannonballs, have been found near the northeast corner of the Alamo Church, where they may have remained untouched since 1836. Buried only a few feet apart, the two artifacts appear to reflect both sides of the siege: one linked to the Mexican Army, the other to the Texan defenders.

The first cannonball was discovered on March 5, just before the 190th anniversary of the battle’s final day. The second was uncovered on June 2, in the next plot over. Both were found at roughly the same depth, in soil with no modern disturbance.

The finds matter because intact solid shot from the Alamo battle era is rare. Archaeologists have recovered shrapnel fragments before, but these two objects are more complete and provide a direct trace of the 13-day siege in what is now downtown San Antonio.

A First Artifact Discovery That Seemed Almost Impossible

Kolby Lanham, the Alamo’s senior researcher and historian, said in a statement that the first discovery was hard to believe when the team realized what had just emerged from the soil.

“There’s no way in the world we just found a cannonball from 190 years ago,” he recalled.

That first artifact was made of solid bronze and is believed to have come from the Mexican Army. Its timing added to the surprise: it was found one day before the anniversary of the battle’s climax. The 1836 Battle of the Alamo killed 180 Texan rebels, including Davy Crockett, who were fighting for Texan independence from Mexico. The church itself was founded as a Spanish mission and reconstructed in 1755.

A Second Cannonball Changed The Story

Only months later, archaeologists found another intact cannonball nearby. This second object was made of iron, slightly larger, and experts believe it came from the Texans trapped inside the Alamo. In a video provided by the Alamo Trust, Tiffany Lindley, the Alamo’s director of archaeology, described the find as unusually significant.

“We have a lot of fragments of shrapnel, but a solid shot, we haven’t found that before, and this is the second one,” she said.

Lindley was off-site when the second cannonball was discovered. An archaeologist sent her a bomb emoji, and she knew she had to return. A small detail, yes, but it says a lot about the surprise inside the excavation team.

Clean Data Gives The Discovery More Weight

Both cannonballs were found adjacent to each other near the northeast corner of the church and at approximately the same depth. Lindley explained that they were recovered in a “clean context,” meaning there were no modern intrusions around their resting places.

“A cannonball is maybe a once-in-a-lifetime – or in my case, a twice-in-a-lifetime – discovery. It’s really exciting,” she said. “What that tells us is that they were in likely their original deposition,” she said. “So whenever they were dropped the very first time—possibly in 1836, probably—they haven’t been touched since.”

The Alamo site has produced artifacts from several periods, including pre-Alamo occupation, the mission era, the 1800s battles, and later industrial history. These artifacts stand apart because they may preserve a direct moment from the siege itself.

Specialists are expected to analyze the cannonballs’ size, materials, and origins in greater detail. For the Alamo archaeology team, the discoveries show that even one of Texas history’s best-known battlefields can still produce new evidence.
