Paul Dano has been added to the star-filled cast of Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Possession remake. The original movie premiered in 1981 and was a psychological horror drama that Andrzej Żuławski directed. It featured Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani.
Paul Dano joins Parker Finn’s Possession remake cast
Dano, the star of movies such as There Will Be Blood and 2022’s The Batman, joins Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley on writer-director Parker Finn’s remake of Possession, according to Deadline. Finn previously garnered widespread acclaim for creating the horror franchise Smile. He penned and then helmed both the 2022 first movie and the 2024 sequel.
Previously, Nexus Point News reported that Dano was in talks to star in the movie.
The plot of the remake remains strictly under wraps. Meanwhile, the original feature tells the story of the relationship between Neill’s Mark, an international spy, and his wife, Anna (Adjani). When Mark returns to his West Berlin home that he shares with Anna and their young son Bob, he discovers that his wife is having an affair. As the plot progresses, Mark begins to notice increasingly disturbing behavior in Anna.
The cast of the original movie also includes Margit Carstensen as Margit Gluckmeister, Heinz Bennent as Heinrich, Johanna Hofer as Heinrich’s mother, Carl Duering as Detective, Shaun Lawton as Zimmermann, and Michael Hogben as Bob.
While Possession underperformed commercially, earning $1.1 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), the R-rated feature mostly drew positive critical responses. It currently has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Notably, back in 2024, the project had Robert Pattinson attached as a producer and a potential star. It seems that he will not appear in the movie after all. If Pattinson remained on board, Possession would have served as a reunion for him and Dano after The Batman. However, Pattinson will still serve as a producer, along with Finn through Bad Feeling production company and Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Andrew Childs.
The Possession remake currently doesn’t have a release date.
