Marvel has revived one of its abandoned Avengers villains in X-Men ’97 Season 2. The latest episodes bring back Rama-Tut, a well-known variant of Kang the Conqueror from Marvel Comics. The appearance comes after Marvel Studios’ decision to scrap Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and shift away from Kang’s planned role in the MCU.

Marvel has unexpectedly found a new place for Kang the Conqueror after abandoning the villain’s planned future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. X-Men ’97 Season 2 has reintroduced one of Kang’s most significant comic book variants, Rama-Tut, making him an important figure in Apocalypse’s origin story despite the cancellation of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The latest episode travels back to ancient Egypt to explore the early life of En Sabah Nur before he becomes Apocalypse. There, the story introduces Rama-Tut as the kingdom’s oppressive ruler, whose treatment of his people fuels En Sabah Nur’s desire for revenge. The conflict helps shape Apocalypse’s rise and reflects on the connection between the two characters in Marvel Comics. Although the series never refers to him as Kang on screen, Rama-Tut is one of the Conqueror’s earliest and most popular identities.
The storyline arrives after Marvel Studios changed its plans for Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jonathan Majors, who portrayed multiple Kang variants, including Rama-Tut, Immortus and Centurion in the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania mid-credits scene, was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and harassment in December 2023. Following the verdict, Marvel ended its association with the actor.
As a result, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was cancelled in 2024. Marvel instead shifted its focus to Avengers: Doomsday, leaving Kang’s long-term future in live action unresolved.
X-Men ’97 returned for its second season on July 1, 2026, debuting with a three-episode premiere on Disney+. The remaining episodes will be released weekly, leading up to the season finale on August 12, 2026.
