In the span of 48 hours, the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers went from NBA afterthoughts to serious title contenders. A pair of unexpected blockbuster trades involving four former all-stars completely changed the trajectory of the 2026-27 season. The moves also significantly impacted the betting odds.
On Tuesday, the Raptors upended the Eastern Conference by getting Kawhi Leonard back from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round selections, one pick swap and two second-round picks.
Further shockwaves were felt on Wednesday when the Boston Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to their first-round playoff opponent, the Philadelphia 76ers, for Paul George, two first-round picks and two additional second-round picks.
Both Toronto and Philadelphia became instant contenders in DraftKings’ latest NBA Finals winner market thanks to the trades. The unexpected moves vaulted both teams from outside of the top 12 and into the top six among title contenders.

Flipping George for Brown, in particular, completely changed Philadelphia’s momentum for next season while simultaneously dropping Boston from Eastern Conference favorites to second place behind the defending champion New York Knicks.

Philadelphia, Toronto go from middle of the pack to real contenders
Philadelphia and Toronto’s big moves elevated the duo to fifth and tied for sixth, respectively, in DraftKings’ latest NBA Finals winner market.
Opening at +5500 odds and 12th overall in the DraftKings title picture just two weeks ago, Philadelphia is up to fifth at +2200 odds — beginning a fascinating cluster of secondary title contenders. Right behind the Sixers comes Toronto, tied for sixth at +2500 odds, after a massive leap from +10000 odds and 20th among teams. Toronto finds itself tied with the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves in title odds.
Philadelphia and Toronto’s big swings were also completely unexpected. DraftKings had 17 teams ahead of the 76ers (+5000 odds) in the Jaylen Brown 2026-27 team market — with the Celtics (+190) still the favorites to retain its homegrown all-star even a day before they traded him away. Now, the Sixers can trot out a star-studded top four featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, emerging guard VJ Edgecombe and Brown to go along with recent free-agent signing Dean Wade.
Toronto reuniting with Leonard was also unforeseen. On June 23rd, the Raptors possessed +5000 odds as Leonard’s team for 2026-27 — tied for 15th among NBA teams. But now that Toronto re-acquired its go-to player from the 2019 title run, expectations are massive for the emerging Raptors. Toronto surprisingly finished as a No. 5 seed last season after a four-year postseason drought. With Leonard returning as a No. 1 option, Toronto will try to maximize its core of Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.
The two trades are also part of an early offseason rise from the Eastern Conference. Six of the top nine DraftKings title hopefuls now come from the East after five of the top eight came from the West in mid-June.
After the flurry of superstar-driven trades made by Philadelphia, Boston and Miami, the Eastern Conference looks like the deeper and more balanced of the two conferences at this point in the offseason.
New York is the new Eastern Conference favorite over Boston
Philadelphia’s trade with Boston also instantly changed the hierarchy of the Eastern Conference. After trading Brown, the Celtics dropped from Eastern Conference favorites to second behind the Knicks on DraftKings.
Sitting firmly in third place in the NBA Finals winner market since the start of the offseason, behind the San Antonio Spurs (+270) and Oklahoma City Thunder (+270), Boston dipped from +650 odds before the trade to +1100 odds after.
New York (+850), jumping into third place on the title odds board past the rival Celtics, is now back in the Eastern Conference driver’s seat despite a quiet offseason focused on re-signing role players. Even with the Knicks losing backup center and offensive rebounding ace Mitchell Robinson to Boston in free agency, New York maintains the edge over the Celtics after Brown changed teams.
Boston’s dominance in the 2020s now comes into question after Brown’s departure. While former MVP Jayson Tatum is expected to be fully recovered from the torn Achilles that hampered his late 2025-26 return, the loss of Brown’s secondary scoring, particularly after his All-NBA season, will be difficult to replace. George is on the downside of his storied career, with injuries and a PED suspension limiting him to only 78 regular-season games across two seasons in Philadelphia.
